White Fire

Raat

This was an excellent album. The deep, fierce aggression is tempered with enough atmospheric and melodic moments to keep it from making you go insane. When they rage, they rage with the fires of Hell, but when they pause, you can breathe with some comfort.

"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, there is a rapture on the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar." This is the only information I could find about the band, although I am familiar with some of the composer's other projects. The album has four songs, and "White Fire" is first. The opening sound like the wind is firing up, signaling a storm. Behind it, comes tortured vocals and sharp guitars, and there is a strong combination of aggression, somber tones, and some moment of melody. A fire burns throughout much of the song, and it never really lets up. There are seconds where you can catch your breath, but the heat comes right back.

"Crystal Dream" opens with creepy organ notes and some harrowing background sounds. The sound that follows is thick, rich, and melodic, but some of the notes to take a haunting turn at times. It reminds me of being stuck in that little area when you are just waking up but not yet fully conscious. The mind can play tricks on you. The vocals rage with anger, and the music bubbles up at times but doesn't quite come to a boil. It keeps you in a perpetual state of tension. "Quiet" is a short piano led song with more eerie sounds. It's calm but tense at the same time. "Haven" is the final song, and darkness enters pretty quickly. It's aggressive, thick, and even overgrown. There are a lot of layers here, and the minute you peel one back, another rears.

The storm clouds lift however at the halfway mark, letting glorious light shine through. The contrasts are stark, and once the light gains entry, it quickly spreads to every crack and crevice. This was an excellent album. The deep, fierce aggression is tempered with enough atmospheric and melodic moments to keep it from making you go insane. When they rage, they rage with the fires of Hell, but when they pause, you can breathe with some comfort.
