Ellereve

One might consider this album being called Black Metal a stretch, but if you’ve been paying attention to the bended genre boundaries of the genre as of late, it makes more sense. The emotional weight of the album is probably the feature I find most impressive, and as I mentioned above, the titles of the songs match how you feel when you listen to them so well. An emotional rollercoaster, this is an album that I would recommend for all fans of dark music.

ELLEREVE is a storm of sound and soul. Drawing from the depths of post-metal, doom, and blackened textures, ELLERVE explores the complexity of emotion without ever losing the haunting, cinematic essence that defines her musical identity. The album has eleven songs, and "An Avalanche of shudders" is first. It opens with soft tones, and emotional ambiance, like the early morning fog lifting. You blink twice, and still can't quite see what is there. It's about the darkness before the dawn. Towering guitar notes drop from the sky, and pound the earth with force, and that power is an unmovable force. "Like a moth to a flame" comes out of the gates with a sturdier riff that is quite somber, but strong. The vocals are very melancholy and expressive, and it mirrors the phrase of the title of the song…moths are attracted to flames, but if they get too close, they will burn.

"Crawl" is much darker and cloudier in nature, and that is one thing that the band is able to do well…show restraint in not making the entire picture clear. "The funeral" takes me to that unwanted situation. Saying goodbye to someone in a public way is not comfortable for anyone involved, and Elisa's shaky vocals echo that sentiment. Emotions swell both in the shift to hard music and vocals, and they retreat again. "Irreversible" refers to taking something to far and not being able to take it back. There are very few of these things in life, but we all know that sinking feeling that settles into your stomach once you realize that fact. The riffs are hard, and powerful, and the vocals are ethereal. "The veil of your Death" has deeply emotional tone, as the title suggests, as well as a more traditional Black Metal sound. At times the sound is also sad, and that brings the title of the song to life.

"Lost in longings" has dreamy and despondent tones, and I don't think I have heard an album that more accurately conveys the feelings of the titles of the songs as well as this album does. It's uncanny. "Unravel" has harder and darker elements, akin to someone who is flirting with the edges of his sanity, and beginning to come apart. When he does finally break, look out, because vengeance is the least of your worries. "Trauma" is the final song, and it closes the album on a dark note. Trauma effects people differently. With some, you can read it on their face, and other choke it down and bury it deep. But it is a weight they carry with them throughout their life. The fat electronic notes and emotional vocals mirror both sides of the coin.

One might consider this album being called Black Metal a stretch, but if you've been paying attention to the bended genre boundaries of the genre as of late, it makes more sense. The emotional weight of the album is probably the feature I find most impressive, and as I mentioned above, the titles of the songs match how you feel when you listen to them so well.
