Illdisposed - Sense The Darkness album cover

Truthfully, I have some difficulties regarding how to begin this review as I always like to find some things to share with your guys that in some weird way are connected to what I am about to bestow upon you. Let's say that at first I had my doubt about this incoming release that I chose to review. I remember seeing this Danish band's name on the flyers and posters of Wacken Open Air 2005 and I thought to myself that may be it will be good idea to explore them because they are rather veteran, older than their fellow country counterparts, the modern Death / Thrash HATESPHERE, which also performed back then, and signed to Roadrunner Records so it had to count for something right? However, I missed the show and now, seven years after, I am sitting here with their new title "Sense The Darkness", now under the wings of Massacre Records. This band is supposed to be the strong and extreme benchmark of the Danish Metal scene, this is the modern Death Metal band of ILLDISPOSED. The reason I said supposed because I think that a pillar of light, or darkness and Death in their case, should a lot more than what I endured on this here release.

Forthrightly what astonished me after I digested this album so many times is the fact that though the band sound pompous, modern as hell following a few special effects and tons of everything they could gather to make this release a deadly, blood boiling show of force, there is still that old craving, that unholy pattern of old school European Death Metal, in particular the old Swedish, Dutch and British stony, rather primitive, and groovy massiveness and chunkiness. Just like the bands of the past, this band didn't settle for lightness, the journey will be utterly heavy, filled with bass, war like guitar chunky rhythms, destructive drumming and guttural vocals just has been maintained for years. However, ILLDISPOSED didn't show anything that I would call brilliant. Surely for rhythm based fans this would be a party to get wild or even go through a wall of Death without blinking, just loosing yourself in a hedge of fresh and moist meat. Sounds disgusting right? Well I am sure that you guys reading this were a part or will be a part of that human wall in one of the extreme gigs. Along with their old school directive, which reminded me of SINISTER, BENEDICTION, GRAVE and even some ENTOMBED, especially the later groovy era, I couldn't shake it that this wicked group also employed the modern rhythms, slightly Hardcorish in nature, and pretty much reoccurring song after song.

Although I am not a fan of Deathcore or stuff like that, yet I couldn't say that I didn't like a passage here and there. I was more into the old school stuff even if it was rather repetitive, slightly anaemic and monotonic. Thanks to some lead guitar efforts made by the guitarists that savoured some great moments as they made me fall in love with the sounds of "Too Blind To See" and "Desire" that really surged energy out of me towards my surroundings. Aside from a solid vocalic efforts, even the riffing wasn't so wearisome and that cyclic. On the other hand, there have been instants where I latterly wanted to slam my head to make it stop. Well, not that strong negative emotions, but it came to the point where I couldn't take enjoyment out of it. Furthermore, I must say that with all that slamming production that brought everything forward and with a whole lot of uncontrollable dynamism and vitality, the production of the vocals was terrible to my taste, other than barely distinguishing a word out of low end gutter growls, it seemed that the main voice was infested with additional effects and additional channels that mixed really bad. Bottom line, this is an ok album with solid material that I believed could be way better from such a veteran group. I wasn't too enthusiastic about the modern elements in ILLDISPOSED's music, yet it is bearable and even pleasant.
