The Baroness Sessions

Jason Bieler And The Baron Von Bielski Orchestra

It’s not a stretch to say that The Baroness has one of the best voices in the music industry today. Her voice control and sense of pitch is astonishing, and Jason’s music lays a soft featherbed underneath her so that she is free to express herself…and sing she does. This album is bursting with emotion, substance, and style, and I am so very glad I have the chance to enjoy it.

Jason Bieler is probably most famous for being the guitarist and later the singer/guitarist for the gritty Metal band SAIGON KICK in the 1990's. Since then, he has ventured out on his own. His latest project, featuring the singer known as Baroness, is presented here. Bandcamp describes the band and album as "A post-apocalyptic troubadour with a penchant for the sonically grotesque," and "from deep within the re-imaginarium of the Baron Von Bielski Audio Propulsion Laboratories emerge fresh extrapolations, voiced by the mellifluous Baroness." The album has nine songs.

"Human Head" is first. It has comforting, soothing tones, with a bit of sadness, and The Baroness" has a deeply special voice. It's a bit frail, but very expressive, and the orchestral elements work nicely here. "On the wings of Satan" she sings gently. It's catchy, and pleasing. "Hollow" is another melodic winner, and who knew Jason was such an excellent songwriter? Sometimes, we get caught up in the Metal image, but this is him stripped down naked, and what he presents is nothing short of spectacular. His smooth piano notes are the perfect accompaniment to her vocals. The two create a synergy that can't be denied. "Violent World" is a bit darker, and even firmer, and The Baroness's vocals are on FIRE here. They are as sultry and soothing and they are energetic and exiting.

"Disarmed & Disowned" has a straight up Pop sound, and the melodies are bright, vital, and hang out there in the air for the listener to grab and snuggle up with. Light. orchestral elements just augment the sound so well. "Birds of Prey" hears the album take up a struggle of sorts, and The Baroness's voice soars high into the heavens. They pierce through the cloudy veil of difficulty and come out triumphant in the end. The lead guitar work is excellent as well. "Vampire Souls" has a strange comfort to it…almost like a warm blanket on a cold, windy day. Grab it, wrap it around you, and drift to sleep. The chorus is catchy, and the vocal harmonies are on point. "Led by Voices" is a darker offering, and her sultry and expressive vocals stir your soul. "True North" closes the album, and it's another awfully catchy song, with positive messages for the listener. Let this song sweep you off your feet, and "warm your heart."

It's not a stretch to say that The Baroness has one of the best voices in the music industry today. Her voice control and sense of pitch is astonishing, and Jason's music lays a soft featherbed underneath her so that she is free to express herself…and sing she does. This album is bursting with emotion, substance, and style, and I am so very glad I have the chance to enjoy it.
