Kill All Idols
Desaster

DESASTER were formed in 1988, and they are from Koblenz, Germany. The Black and Thrash Metal outfit have an impressive discography including three EPs, nine full-length albums, and four live albums. With the release of "Kill All Idols", they reached double figures in terms of full-length albums. It was mixed and mastered by Greg Wilkinson (DEATHGRAVE; HYPERDONTIA; NECROT). The album has a length of about 39 minutes, and it was released via US Metal specialists Metal Blade Records. The album starts strong and frantic with the song "Great Repulsive Force". The guitar riffing is devastating, and the melodies are grim. The vocals are growls varying around the medium end of the guttural range. Verse and chorus parts are supported by double-bass and blast-beat attacks. It is a fast track for most of the time; however, the tempo slows down for the break for a dark delivery at a measured tempo. There is a seamless transition into "Emanation Of The Profane", which starts with powerful guitar riffing and catchy melodies at mid-tempo. Despite the catchiness, the melodic framework remains dark with a few melancholic traces in it. The main melody carries the track forward through the verse and chorus parts, and even through the very short break.
"Towards Oblivion" starts with a lead guitar solo leading into a fast track with punishing guitar riff that are simple and direct. The track has a few Punk and Hardcore vibes as well as a lot of aggression. The mid-tempo break is very powerful with thunderous riffs accompanied by the vocals and, after a shift in tempo, by a very contributing lead guitar solo. "Towards Oblivion" was released as video, and the YouTube link is provided below. The de facto title track "Kill The Idol" is pure insanity and blisteringly fast. The guitar riffing is tight, and the melodies are grim, while the vocals follow the melodies. There is backing vocal support for the sing-along chorus line. The short break slows down to mid-tempo, but it does not last for long as the track finishes with another round of insanity. "Ash Cloud Ritual" starts with a frantic pre-lude, transitioning into a verse part at measured tempo and a sluggish rhythm with thunderous guitar riffing and bone-chilling melodies. The sound of the track is the darkest and most blackened, what the album offers. The chorus line is supported by backing vocals once again. The break starts with flesh-ripping guitar riffs and blast-beats at crazy pace until the end of the track.
"Fathomless Victory" is introduced by the guitars with the main riff at a measured tempo. It is an extended instrumental introduction, which takes about 90 seconds. The melodies are blood-freezing when the track goes into the verse part at mid-tempo. The choruses maintain the pace and darkness with an anthemic chorus line including backing vocal support. The break is introduced by the guitars and there is a tempo switch towards crazy pace, while the guitars are supported by the vocals. It all becomes a bit lengthy as the break is quiet and entirely build around the main riff and melody. "Fathomless Victory" is perhaps the most epic track and it is the longest album track with almost seven minutes playing time. "Throne Of Ecstacy" is a drastic switch in sound: fast, furious, direct, and aggressive. The guitar riffing has plenty of Black Metal vibes, the melodies are grim, and the vocals carry forward all the anger and aggression of the track. The break slows down to mid-tempo, however, it does not take long to switch back to crazy pace. "They Are The Law" keeps going with the pace and directness. It is the track with most Punk/Hardcore vibes and plenty of aggression. The guitar riffing is simple and direct, and it is supported by strong basslines. The break delivers a short but contributing lead guitar solo.
"They Are The Law" is one of my favourite album tracks. "Stellar Remnant" has a slow start going into the verse part at a measured tempo. The guitar riffs are powerful and very direct again. The transition to the choruses is seamless with an abrupt switch to insanity in pace. However, the track cannot quite keep up with most album songs. The final track of the album "Idol's End" is a grim instrumental outro, driven by the guitars, bass, and the drums, where the melodies are chilling and melancholic. DESASTER deliver consistency with their 10th studio album. "Kill All Idols" is a smart mixture of Black and Thrash Metal with influences from the early 80s and a few Punk/Hardcore twists. The songs offer versatility in sound, where pace and aggression alternates with darkness. The album is well produced. Fans who love the best elements of Black and Thrash Metal enriched with the sound of the old classics will dig the songs on "Kill All Idols".
