I Found the Love That I Was Looking For

Wounds of Recollection

The beauty in this album lies mostly in its paradox. Conventional wisdom would suggest that the deep chasm of extremes on the album seem impossible to occupy the same space, yet they do. The raging vocals rise like a tidal wave that threatens to roll right over you, while warm melodies bubble underneath, keeping you safe. Taken as a whole, it lavishes in wonder, and in darkness.

WOUNDS OF RECOLLECTION is the first and longest-running project of the anonymous one-man black metal artist known only as Annos. In contrast of the darker atmosphere of Annos' other projects, they weave uplifting atmospheric black metal and crushing post-metal in between somber moments of folk, post-rock, and emo to create a sound inspired by a deep sense of nostalgia. "I Found the Love That I Was Looking For" is the final act of a coming-of-age story. Since 2014, they have been an outlet for voicing fears and struggles through transition into adulthood. From writing songs about first heartbreaks, to struggles with anxiety, to first experiences with death, to college graduation and fear of what's beyond, this album is a celebration of living a simple life and an expression of gratitude for everyone and everything that has paved the path to a fulfilling life. "I am not significant or meant for greater things. I am enough, at least, so I am content."

The album has seven songs, and "Sleep With the Lights On" is first. It has pretty notes, as well as energy, but is slightly somber. The clean vocals are smooth, and welcoming, and even the harsh vocals are loaded with emotion. "Places From a Movie Scene" was the first single released ahead of the album. The harsh vocals rage like a storm on the mountaintop, but the guitar melodies shine through like a beacon in the dark. They walk like they don't have a care in the world. "Everyone I Love Will Someday Die" is another gorgeous offering where the fury of the vocals is tempered so well with warm melodies. It recounts the things that we don't often say to our loved ones until they are gone, and it celebrates the sharing of these messages. "All the signs that I am grateful you're alive, might be missed when we're just passing through this life." The sadness is very real, and it tugs hard on your sleeve with every step through the song.

"Last Moment on Earth" is a short, sweet offering, consisting mostly of piano notes and backing ambiance. It provides the listener with a break of the raging vocals, and perhaps, a chance to reflect. "Blue Bird on the Tarmac" builds slowly with layers of beauty, and again, even the harsh vocals can't blot out their light. Hearty bass notes provide the song with some energy, and every turn is a new surprise, a new discovery. The filth of the harsh vocals makes these moments of bliss even more pronounced. "Your Last Christmas" is a collection of memories of a loved one passed, and struggle with religion and the belief in a higher power. It's performed as if it was a personal experience from the artist. "I'll pretend I got saved and cast out all the demons and fell to my knees, it's okay…just so you can watch the sun set" he sings, choking back tears? Each added layer brings more and more emotion.

The title track closes the album, with gentle, warm tones at first. A raging storm follows, but once again, the light that guides your path through it remains as luminous as ever. There's a moment where the thunder and lightning subside, and the rainbow that appears on the horizon is a reminder that the pain will go away.
