A Funeral of Being
My Last Promise

From Bandcamp, comes this notation about the band: MY LAST PROMISE is a one-woman post-black/depressive black metal project, founded by Ukrainian artist Haze in 2024. The album has nine songs, and the title track is first. Very solemn tones lead off the song, with whispered, emotional vocals that make the listener sound like he has wandered into someone else's dream. Tortured vocals screams come in from there, and the music hardens a bit, flexing back and forth as someone who might be experiencing a crisis might feel. It wrestles, with every fiber of its being, refusing to lie down and fade away. "Thoughts After the Gun Jams" may refer to the second guessing that can occur after a thwarted suicide attempt, and the vocal screams reflect both her anger and her frustration.
The question "why" is the main theme of the song "Hurt." Why do we hurt those we love? It's part of our flawed existence I say. She screams it out with a burning fervor, the kind that can burn a hole right through your chest and heart. The music is solemn once again. "Broken Trust" is a short instrumental consisting of melancholy piano notes…the kind that sound like they are playing as a stretch of ten grey and rainy days continue. "Life Has Always Been This Shade" reflects the feelings of a person who just doesn't want to be here, reminding you that the darkness in your life has always, and will always be there. But, she screams that, as if she wants everyone to know.
"Ashes of My Former Self" is an ode to feeling nostalgic, perhaps to a simpler time in life when it was easier. The music is firmer, and the vocal screams reflect both anger and sadness. Her screams could wake the dead. "No Point in Suffering" seems to reflect not a resolve in leaving things behind, but rather giving into the pain. The guitar tones are sharp, and this music is not for the faint at heart. It mellows towards the end. "Forgotten" has darker tones and more aggressive music. The vocals are also particularly snarly, and scratchy, and they sound like they come from a place beneath the diaphragm. "Emptiness" caps the album, with soft rain and sad piano notes. That seems to be all that is left…emptiness.
For me, "A Funeral of Being" is an excellent descriptor of the duality of our existence. Consider the phrasing of the album title We all try our best, most of the time, so why does it seem like we are always getting beat down, and can't get ahead? Maybe that's the pessimist in me talking. In any case, the album is an absolute depressive affair that is fueled by raw emotion.
