Decadence of Ego

Chelmno

Black Metal purists may like this album. I understand where the FWOBM sound came from, and why it formed, but I am more of a fan of the expansive fans in the genre and what they are doing today. This just feels like a few steps back into time for me, and I say, let the past stay in the past.

From Bandcamp, "If you're keen on the Italian black metal scene, then you are likely familiar with the drummer Vidharr who also performs in the great TENEBRAE IN PERPETUUM (whose latest album is phenomenal) and the more suicidally bleak BEATRIK, in addition to some other acts. CHELMNO is another if his many quality efforts, though this band performs across a more cosmic, raw night sky vision of malevolent starfalls and infinite chaos, firmly rooted in the traditions of EMPEROR, DARKTHRONE, MAYHEM, and BATHORY, with a firm grasp of glorious, bloodied melodic streaming that uses both variation and monotony as a forte."

The album has eight songs, and "Hunger for Light" is first; a short introduction to the album. I hear light winds in the background, and perhaps footsteps, and some eerie electronics…unsure what is coming next. "Three Stones and an Iron Crown" roars out of the gate with a FWOBM sound. There are lightning fast drums, a wall of riffs, scratchy harsh vocals, and a buzz that sounds like it comes from 100,000 bees. The production is about as raw as it gets…it's awful, but that is the style, and the tradition. The title track is more of the same. One thing that the band does is press on the gas pedal and stomps it to the ground, not letting it up for even a few seconds. But with the vastness of Black Metal today, you have to find a niche for yourself, other than following someone else's path.

"The Sleeping Demon" is more of the same, and they aren't trying very hard to switch up their core sound. That is certainly fine, but when you have half an album of nearly the same pacing and the same sound, it doesn't do much for the listener. "A Name Written in Water" is the first song with any sort of variation. Although the guitar wall drops a bit, the riffs are still very trebley, and scratchy, and the wall goes up pretty quickly.   Old habits sometimes die hard. "Ravenous Flame" is equally as meaty as the other songs, and it's hard to push aside the thousands of little braches to reach the center…because the branches are the crux of the sound. "The Guardian of Silence" is another song that burns for a long time, almost like a flame that can't be extinguished.

"Don't Come to my Funeral" is the final offering, and it's more of the same. Black Metal purists may like this album. I understand where the FWOBM sound came from, and why it formed, but I am more of a fan of the expansive fans in the genre and what they are doing today. This just feels like a few steps back into time for me, and I say, let the past stay in the past.
