Zwischenwelten

Rauhnächt

This was a decent Black Metal album…nothing overly special, but it did make a mark on both the rage and hopeless categories, which can indeed coexist. My only real critique would be for the band to take a few more chances on the next album, and forge their own path ahead.

All that I could find out about the band were a couple of sentences on The Metal Archives: "Sometime in late 2012 or 2013, the band changed the spelling of their name to RAUHNACHT (approximating Austro-Bavarian pronunciation) to avoid confusion with the Upper Austrian folk/funk/rock band called RAUHNACHT." The Pagan Metal band's new album has six songs, and "Der Spalt Zwischen den Welten" is first. It charges out of the gate with a wall of riffs, machine gun drumming, and a good dose of darkness. The aggression is one central theme, but so is the depressive tones. It has a good combination of both, and the production is right around where purists might want it to be, but is overly treble for me.

"Letzter Pfad" is a bit slower, with some leads that make the song sound like it is going off to war. The slower grind begins to sink in, and it's more hopelessness again. The chanting also adds to an absolutely desperate feeling. "Des Mark des Lebens" is another dark and thick offering that sounds like tree branches that have come alive and are spreading everywhere in the ground beneath. This time, many of the despondent qualities are replaces with pure rage and aggression. "Eines Tages seid ihr frei" hears the madness of some of the earlier songs slow a bit, replaced with somber clean guitars. Hardened Black Metal elements follow, and the somber feeling is magnified. The clean vocals are a bit of a nice surprise, and they add another element to the album.

"Naturgewalten" hints at something even darker lurking in the shadows, and it buzzes with some electronics. A hardened metal sound follows, and it's equal parts rage, aggression, and hopelessness. "Alleinsamkeit" closes the album, and it gathers all of the undead of the world to one central place to form ranks and march upon the earth. They forge ahead, meeting little resistance, until anyone left has no place to run or hide. Overall, this was a decent Black Metal album…nothing overly special, but it did make a mark on both the rage and hopeless categories, which can indeed coexist. My only real critique would be for the band to take a few more chances on the next album, and forge their own path ahead.
