High On Metal

When BLACK SABBATH invented Metal, at least that's the history I know, it was supposed to bring feeling of desperation, decay and death; I think that is what you get in the "Black Sabbath" song. The Speed Metal genre is supposed to be the same just on steroids, fast, furious, kickass and loud so the people listing will be headbanging and beating the shit out of each other. It was a long time since I heard a true or pure Speed Metal band, I was very surprised when the Devil (Lucifer) handed me a Speed Metal album, yes I get my music from the all mighty himself, and he didn't hand it to me I got it as an mp3 file, apparently even the devil is a computer savvy. I was very nervous when I started listening to SEAX's album, I have been waiting a long time for a good Speed Metal band that will kick my ass and send me back to my happy days, head banging to "Kill 'Em All" of METALLICA or VENOM's "Black Metal" and yes "Kill 'Em All", it's one of the first Speed Metal albums, one of the best ever.
I don't know SEAX, never heard of them. SEAX was founded in August 2009 by guitarist Hel & Martin Roche from the ashes of a Doom Metal band named DEAD LANGUAGES. According to them the main focus was to bring old school Speed Metal into the New England area and then to the rest of the world .
The album starts with "Blade Of The Seax" which disappointed me because I was hoping for a brutal Speed Metal song and "Blade Of The Seax" is kind of a Speed Metal for Kids lacking power and even bass. Nevertheless, it's a nice song with Speed Metal rhythm and it follows all of the Speed Metal rules. After a slow start (in my opinion) comes "Molten Iron" with some soaring vocals from lead singer Carmine Blades. Again the rhythm is fast with no bullshit on the side, however the screams gave a more powerful sensation to this song. "Livin' Above The Law" shifts the band to some kind of NWOBHM, very similar to IRON MAIDEN's Paul Di'Anno days. The opening riff is very nice and resembles IRON MAIDEN's "Killers", if you ask me it's isn't bad thing at all.
Honorable mention goes to "High On Metal" a must have song in every Speed Metal album, hailing Metal music with soaring vocals, catchy riffs, rhythm changes and a cool solo section which will become a classic song of this band eventually. The last song "Need For Speed" continues the same Speed Metal / NWOBHM style and rhythms, however the song seems like a continuation of "High on Metal". In my opinion it lacks sophistication but yet again Speed Metal isn't sophisticated.
I don't think that this is a Speed Metal album per say it's a fusion between Speed and NWOBHM, in the end it's all comes down to each and every one point of view.My point of view is that this is a good and solid album that has some imperfections such as production qualities. I do think that thelead vocalist needs to use his high endabilities more in order to raise the bar of some of the songs. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing from SEAX in the near future.
The ultimate question is, will I buy (or download) this album and go to the band's show? I would have to say yes! This album is a good album and I'm surethat SEAX gives a hell of a show on stage like getting stabbed in the belly.
