The melodies on the album are glorious in their defiance. Like streaks of golden light cutting through storm clouds, they emerge through tremolo lines, layered harmonies, and swelling, mournful leads. In many moments, it feels less like the darkness is being accompanied by beauty, and more like it’s being challenged by it. Devastating in its weight, but luminous in its execution, it pulls you into shadow, only to show you how much light still lives there. It’s a breathtaking storm where melody triumphs not by avoiding the darkness, but by illuminating it.

"lövërliminal" is the debut album of ØLTRELUCE, dedicated to impossible loves, separated by dimensions but united in ethereal feelings, transcending time, space and the meaning itself of body senses. The album has none songs, and “radiance” is first. It’s a short song, but the melodies offered are sugary sweet…the kind that warm you from your head down to your toes on an otherwise brutally cold day. Segueing into “satëllifall,” the comforting melodies continue, and a hardened riff joins in with thick bass notes. Harsh vocals screams pierce the veil, but that melody can’t be stamped out. It’s a testament to the power of good music. “cërulëan.sad.wavës” swims on the shallow shores, where the waves have less impact. The heavy screeching of distorted guitars threatens to take over the entire song, but are unable to steal the spotlight. Just when the dark rains begin to fall, the sunlight peaks in.

“glicinëskin” comes out of the gate with a firmer and sharper sound, that soon gives way to calmer passages. The harsh vocals burn a hole in the otherwise serene landscape, but he melodies have a foothold. “möönsway” is a short little number that features clean, ethereal tones, and the feeling that you are in a nice, warm dream. The guitar work is thick, and the melodies surreal. The harsh vocals try to cast a black cloud, but their shadow is just too small.  Segueing into “sunburst.ëyës,” bass and clean guitar lead the charge of melody, and although the distorted guitars are harsh on your ears, the melody line prances forth. It’s so pretty, it makes your heart ache. “stardancë” chugs forward with meaty bass notes and drums, augmented with a firm hand in the guitars. Darkness abounds, but it also creates a curiosity in the listener that can’t be thwarted.

“indigö.suntidë” features somber melodies that are so emotional, it feels like your heart breaking over and over again. They are oppressive. In the end, however, the pain lessens, with a palate of clean vocals. “ëthër” is the final offering, and it closes the album with a sense of balance between Black Metal and Gaze. It rides tension out like a blade…never fully committing to the kill or the retreat.
