Domkraft

DOMKRAFT is as DOMKRAFT does. They craft Doom metal. Sludgy stoner doom metal dripping with ichor. They hail from Stockholm, Sweden and have been at the game since before 2015 when they released their self-titled debut EP. This month on June 27 they mark the 10th anniversary of that album by re-releasing it via Magnetic Eye Records with the original four tracks plus two previously unreleased new tracks.
Usually, re-releases are for collectors and longtime fans, but with DOMKRAFT it feels like an opportunity for people who may have never heard of them to get turned on to some essential unfiltered sludge. Kicking off with “Concrete Waves” the band assaults with just that—waves and waves of concrete . . . but fuzzy, psych concrete. Oh, and ten minutes of it. So, yeah, buckle in for this one. Next up is “Horses Horses,” a track so good that they had to name it twice. Listening to this track is indeed like being trampled not by one horse but two horses. Kind of just won’t stop. Love it.
With the third track, “Invaders,” we have a shift to something a little less abusive and more on the melodic side. Hypnotic cosmic vibes with this one. “Treeman” is the last of the tracks from the debut EP. It’s sludgy, swampy Doom. If it’s a tree it’s a Bald Cypress—you know the type that grows thick in the Louisiana swamps and looks like a banshee might smell, if you can follow that.
Although the penultimate track is a “new,” it fits in exceptionally well with the trajectory of the original four. Like a grafted organic extension, it could have been the hidden fifth track on the 2015 EP. The final track, “The Bane,” on the other hand, does seem a slight world apart from the others. If I had to pick a next of kin, I’d say it’s most related to “Concrete Waves” with tidal surges of saturated db that just keep rolling in. But there’s also this eerie, unsettling ambiance to it, a something-wicked-this-way-comes-and-it-means-to-bruise-and-maim vibe. Great track.
DOMKRAFT, Doomkraft. If you missed their debut in 2015, you get a second chance in 2025. Nothing like being ten years late for the party . . . but in the metalsphere there never really is such a thing as being too late. Hell, every week I get turned on to bands I never knew existed. So, if you are new to DOMKRAFT, welcome to the swamp. If you have been here all along, slide over and make some room.
