Mysteries Of a Flowery Dream
Jade

From this uniquely original atmospheric death/doom metal quartet from Catalonia, Spain “Mysteries of a Flowery Dream” is a mesmerizing full-length album. It’s immersive soundscape, like a lucid dream, leads you through eerie haunted corridors of the mind where an unearthly presence seems to stalk your every step, wrapping each moment in a growing sense of dread. The fear builds and at times becomes all encompassing. The soundscape seems to be formed from the echoes of countless parallel worlds converging into one, each realm a spectral layer whispering with beauty and unease. JADE’s music is described by J. as “a tribute to the timeless obscure metal language, from early death/doom manifestations to later atmospheric black acts, in a really heavy, intense and epic form which transcends ages, as the greenstone cult has endured”
Everything is carefully crafted including the name of the band which was deliberately chosen for its meaning. Jade, a rare and treasured greenstone, revered across ancient cultures was often imbued with spiritual symbolism and seen as a conduit between the earthly and the unknown. This symbolism echoes the bands creative ethos. The dark unsettling lyrics draw on tradition, myths and forgotten cults. No detail is spared and one of the main elements of the cover artwork is the moon goddess Ixchel, a creative yet destructive entity, portrayed as the spider and threading human fate like an umbilical cord, determined to give life but also to destroy it if needed. The album opens with “The Star’s Shelter” incorporating whispered haunting vocals and a gradual layering of sound that steadily builds in intensity. Evocative guitar licks and powerful riffs are added as the whispering grows more urgent. Lyrically the track explores the celestial realm and its power to guide us through dark and ominous times. It’s a perfect sonic embodiment of the track’s title.
“Lights Blood” follows with fierce intensity, fast riffs, blast beats, and shouting vocals that explore dreams as omens. Growls soon take over, like warnings from beyond. The track shifts into melodic territory, with harmonics, a prominent bassline, and soaring intense guitar sweeps that feel like a search for meaning. “Shores of Otherness” opens with clean vocals shouting into the void, echoing faintly before being swept into the mix. Growls soon dominate, with the shouted vocals returning in bursts. A mid-tempo drive builds to a faster more intense pace. The lyrics explore dream travel through the Mayan cosmovision, seeking guidance, healing, and messages from other worlds. It closes with a layered chorus of voices. “The Star’s Shelter (II)” features a beautiful melancholic guitar solo that glides over the soundscape and gradually slows to a poignant, emotionally charged finish.
“9th Episode” erupts with pounding drums and a shifting soundscape. Shouted voices fade into growls as speed builds with hyper blast beats and dissonant guitars. “Darkness of Movement” is dark yet beautiful, intense and dynamic. “A Flowery Dream” brings the album to a close with its melodic passages, dissonant turns and memorable riffs. Overall, a truly captivating album, otherworldly and thought provoking. It has a mix of stirring beauty and an overwhelming sense of unease. The level of creativity and musicianship is exceptional. An album to return to again and again each time discovering something new.
