River Red

Thurifer

This album has a little something for everyone…crushing Metal tones, melody, darkness, and fleeting moments of hope. The combination of both clean and harsh vocals add depth to the album as well, and this EP is just enough of a tease to get my juices flowing.

May 30 saw the release of "River Red," the brand new five track EP by THURIFER. The four-piece metal band from Finland is combining heavy, groove-driven riffs with atmospheric melodies and raw intensity. Their music strikes a balance between crushing aggression and haunting harmonies, forging a distinct identity in the modern metal scene. Fronted by singer-guitarist Jukka Salovaara, the band also features lead guitarist Niko Meriläinen, drummer Tommi Hirvonen, and bassist Jukka-Pekka Nissinen. Together, they showcase a powerful range of sounds on their latest five-song EP, delivering both depth and intensity in equal measure.

The EP has five songs, and “Distorted Dream” is first. The opening tones are thick, heavy, and sludgy, and the harsh vocals compliment the dejected sound. The melody that comes in however sees the skies lighten a little, and you can hear some of the Alternative influences in the structure of the chorus. “Seven” begins with ethereal vocals and melodies, and the gentle sound is charming. The hardened tones that follow however are weighted and punishing, and the contrast so far is well done. The title track features some sturdy and haunting piano notes, but the sound that follow is crushingly heavy. It’s like a dire, ominous warning.

“Witness” begins with a smooth, gentle swing, and here is where you get some of the groove elements from the band. The vocals are clean, and melancholy, but that fast and heavy sound comes roaring back with a renewed vigor. The explosion towards the end leaves your face covered in debris. “Judgement” closes the album, and the tones are much more weighted and sorrowful. I also get some ALICE IN CHAINS vibes from the harmonized vocals. This album has a little something for everyone…crushing Metal tones, melody, darkness, and fleeting moments of hope. The combination of both clean and harsh vocals add depth to the album as well, and this EP is just enough of a tease to get my juices flowing.
