Impermanence
Thraeds

From Bandcamp, “Multinational Berlin-based progressive/post-metal band THRÆDS are about to released their self-produced debut album. “Impermanence” is simultaneously a journey through space-time and the soul. THRÆDS’ sound blends heavy and melodic, bitter and sweet, groove and passion in equal measure.” With “Impermanence,” THRÆDS explore the fragile and fleeting nature of existence through eight meticulously composed tracks. The band confronts the inevitability of entropy and the cycles of creation and destruction, shaping a sound that is both intense and immersive. Their music evolves between moments of overwhelming heaviness and eerie stillness, reflecting the unpredictable forces that shape human experience.”
The album has eight songs, and “Timeless” is first. It eases slowly, with clean, somber guitar notes. The vocals are mellow and smooth, but they also have an emotional bite, and the music is soft at times and hardened at others. “Reflections” has meaty bass notes to go along with the thicker guitar parts. The song has a noticeable groover to it, and a nice balance between both a gentle and aggressive sound. “Nothing Good to Say” has smooth, somber tones for the most part, but there are also some emotional peaks, and the weight of the burden seems to grow throughout. “Clockworks” has a drumbeat that mirrors the ticking of a clock, and the subdued sound is akin to early morning fog hanging around after the sunrise. The emotional peaks of the music sneak up at you, and the band is good at building these layers.
“Sole Survivor” comes out of the gate with semi-jovial tones, but they are soon dashed by harsh, angry vocals. It transitions in and out of several different sections of audibility along the way. “Devolve” has some psychedelic qualities to go along with the heavy, slow bottom end, but I don’t care for some of the overly cadenced vocals. There are, however, some nifty meters shifts. “Einstein Rosen Bridge” has smooth, somber vocal harmonies that hint at something else out there that may be playing a role in your life…it’s mire in mystery. Even the hardened tones and harsh vocals contain these messages. “Story in Reverse” closes the album. It moves with silky vocals, thick bass guitar notes, and a slow, lumbering pace, and the sultry saxophone notes bring another feeling with them.
This was a good album, as well as an introspective listening experience. The skies stayed in various shades of grey throughout, never giving in fully to the darkness, but also not offering many peaks of light. In many ways, it’s one person’s take on this thing called life.
