When Worlds Collide
The Cory Smoot Experiment

July 2, 2012
Right from the beginning, you pretty much expect anything involving GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot to have some killer riffs and sick solos. What you probably wouldn't expect is how truly gifted a virtuoso he was or that he was a tremendous multi-instrumentalist. THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT perfectly displays his abilities.
The sound of "When Worlds Collide" is very difficult to pin down, which is always a plus for me. I'm a huge fan of bands that defy description. But if I were to try, I'd say it has a Heavy / Thrash influence mixed with groove and maybe some Metalcore. From the very first note to the last, this is a punch in the teeth and a kick in the gonads all at once (and I mean that in the best way possible). What I truly enjoyed about "When Worlds Collide" was Cory Smoot made it sound totally unique from his main band GWAR while still leaving subtle hints and flavors of it in his album.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I truly did not know what to expect, but the second the intro solo to "The Blood Red" starts, you know you're in for a wild ride! As mentioned earlier, this is definitely Cory Smoot stepping out on his own, but still his GWAR roots are noticeable, like on "Brainfade", "When Worlds Collide", and "Sloth Loves Chunk". The musicianship as a whole is really solid. The guitar, as to be expected, is amazing. The drumming is much better than expected from someone known for their shredding ability. At times, Smoot's singing sounds a bit like his bandmate Oderus Urungus.
All said and done, this is a very well made album. It flows together smoothly. Not a sour note comes from it. It's a shame it had to be released posthumously due to Cory Smoot's passing away suddenly in early November due to complications from heart disease. I would suggest this album to any fans of GWAR, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, or even MUDVAYNE as there is a slight Nu Metal presence.
