Svartsyn

Mylingen

Overall, this wasn’t a bad album per se, but it just lacked some diversity from song to song. Nearly each of the four tracks followed a similar pattern, and although the songs themselves had some shifting perspectives, the album as a whole did not. The band is talented, and so I would expect more from them in the future.

From Bandcamp, they self-describe as “Progressive Melodic Extreme Metal from Sweden,” and further notes about the music include “a journey through the dark recesses of man, exploring themes such as depression, hate, deception and lust.” The album has but four songs, and the title track is first. It comes out of the gates with an aggressive sound and harsh vocals, but it is tempered a bit with some melodic passages. The entire song feels solemn to me, and that weight is a burden. Approaching the halfway mark, the aggression drops, in favor of clean, sober tones, but the contentious tones return again.

“Mörkrets spiral” has a faster pace at first, with blast beat drumming, but it settles into a slower groove with melancholy tones balancing the aggression. From there, the two paces trade off a bit, marking some emotions, and some more clean passages provide a contrast to the heavy weight. “Hatets avgrund” storms out of the gate with some power, and the guitar riffs sound majestic. It settles into another moody offering, navigating a shifting landscape of stormy skies. Another clean passage provides a bit of relief to the heavy emotional burden, but again, the aggression returns. “Månens kraft” closes the four-song EP, and it’s a lengthy offering. It’s a very solemn song, and reminds me of how someone might feel knowing that the world is coming to an end. There are quiet moments of contemplation, sadness, and even some anger.
