Adrift
Marea

From Bandcamp, “MAREA paints moods, dreamscapes and darkest fears through dismal music. The new EP "Adrift" goes a step further towards oblivion than the debut album "The Silence of Rust," depicting touching, melancholic and tearing emotions crystallized in three songs. The atmospheric style rooted in Post-Black Metal is enriched with hints of Doom and Post-Rock, while intricate melodies and high-pitched desperate screams lean towards more depressive shores.” The album has but three songs. “Useless” is first. The opening chords are dissonant, but a bit bouncy, and the harsh vocals butt up against them with contrast. You can feel a fleeting sense of hope within the music, but it is buried. The vocals vary at times between deep gutturals and tortured screams, and the song has desolate qualities. “Rusted” has much smoother and gentler tones, the darkness is lifted like a veil from the morning sky, and here comes much of the dichotomy within the Post Metal genre. The harsh vocals present a different side of the story, and they are raging, and tortured. The title track closes the album, again with gentle opening tones. For me, it’s like a walk in the part in a warm spring day, but the buildings in the distance hide an approaching storm. The storm just hangs there, without advancing, and just like that, the album is over. In the end, three songs just weren’t enough to get to know the band as best as I had hoped. The three on the album are a study in contrasts, and I have the feeling there is a lot more about the band that remains a mystery. I will earmark them to a full-length soon to really delve into their music.
