Get Well Soon

Lo-Pan

Riffs…massive, hulky, towering riffs for days…that is the core of the album for me. If you ask some modern reviewers, they might say the art of the riff is dead. Rather than retort, just play this album instead of arguing with them.

From Bandcamp, “On this album, LO-PAN further define their brand of American Hard Rock, a wicked stylistic mix of deep fried heaviness sprinkled with metal and grunge. LO-PAN came together in the vibrant underground Columbus scene out of a shared love of vintage rock, stoner metal, and modern heaviness. The four musicians were united by a passion for pushing boundaries. "Get Well Soon" heralds another great leap forward for LO-PAN. Heavy, cool, catchy, and with a marked emotional resonance developed through experience and maturity, "Get Well Soon" will take the Americans to new places around the globe.

The album has nine songs, and “The Good Fight” is first. What strikes me first is how gritty their brand of Hard Rock is. The riffs are hefty, chunky, and even grungy, and the vocals sing over top of them with a bit of a snarl. The size of the riff in the chorus is towering. “Wormwood” is another gritty offering, and these riffs are filthy. The melodies take a bit of a back seat to the dirty sound, and aren’t quite as pronounced. “Ozymandias” is low, slow, and even nastier in scope, and I hear some DOWN and some CROWBAR in the riffs. They reverberate in combination with the bass guitar and create a wall. “Rogue Wave” has another massive riff that just towers over the competition, and the soulful vocals connect a bit better with the music.

“Harpers Ferry” has a simple riff that dances a bit, and is very effective at making itself known. I hear a bit of Doom in this song, mostly from the depressive nature of the chords. The vocals have the most emotion of anything in their music for me. “Stay with the Boat” has a chugging low bass entrance and the sing of what to come is thick. The riff joins in, with some wah-wah in the leads, and the vocals carry the song from there. “God’s Favorite Victim” has another massive riff that is capable of blowing through a concrete wall. The vocals reach out and grab you by the throat also, and are so laden with emotion. “Six Bells” closes the album, and it’s an eight minute beast…a slow, lumbering song that has contrast between the cold riffs and warm vocals.

Riffs…massive, hulky, towering riffs for days…that is the core of the album for me. If you ask some modern reviewers, they might say the art of the riff is dead. Rather than retort, just play this album instead of arguing with them.
