Psychedelic Rock is my gem. Add some fuzz with some trippy arrangements and some crazy vocal melody and you got me hooked. There is a Canadian band called SWEETBEAST that fits that bill well. They are releasing a half album (I just invented that) with 6 tunes full of distortion and melody. The album cover is already sweet, but let's check what is inside. We start with “70-30” that starts with a nice and mellow arrangement with a crying guitar soloing to set the mood until you are invaded by fuzz and wah pedals in a killer riff. I can’t help to think about BLACK SABBATH and SOUNDGARDEN as their influences. The tempo change for the guitar solos on this track is also cool.
We follow with the nice bass of Alex Graham introducing the killer “Thunder”that has a frenetic introductory riff. The guys are not in a hurry to get to the vocal lines and this is great. Give me all the introduction you need with great Hard Rock riffs and creative arrangements. And the psychedelics keep kicking in with the ethereal “Dream Eater” that takes you for a journey. An album to listen stoned for sure. The arrangements on this track gave me PINK FLOYD vibes. We reach “Midnight” that starts like a clock ticking on a guitar riff. This is a different track from the others. I believe the band is trying to explore some weird arrangements and this is cool. This track has almost a Punk vibe. The band has competent guitar players in Eric Gorzynski and John Hermary that produces some tasty licks, solos and also some good singing. We reach the trippy as fuck “Plastic People” that is in a more slow and psychedelic mood in the beginning until it breaks to the crunchy guitar riffs. The tune gets in to some complicated tempo changes induced by competent drummer Colton Schofield that is new to my years.
This track gives me a MASTODON vibe with Brent singing. We reach our short journey with another as crunchy as you can handle guitar riff with “Space Queen” that keeps the interesting ideas with a strange singing melody, tempo changes and unique song structure. The band is not afraid to explore and this is shown in the last 2 tracks. For me this is a good release full of different melodic ideas covered with some cool riffs and extremely heavy. A downloader for sure.
