We Lost Our Hope Along The Way
Autumn’s Dawn

From Bandcamp, “Expanding on their roots in depressive rock and black metal, AUTUMN’s DAWN has created an album that is both familiar and daringly new. With tracks that balance harrowing intensity and moments of poignant beauty, “We Lost Our Hope Along the Way” explores themes of despair, loss, and fleeting hope. The inclusion of 90s rock influences adds a nostalgic yet modern dynamic, creating a rich and immersive listening experience.” The album has eight songs, and “Infinity on Low” is first, and it’s a short mood-setter. The mood is very solemn, and the medium is piano.
“Ever Fading Light” is the first proper track. The riff is low and slow, and I picture deep hues of grey. Harsh vocals sink the song deeper into depressive tones, but the mood changes with some guitar melody and then in come these rich clean vocal harmonies. From there, it’s a fight to the death between the two moods with no clear winner. “Dream of Yesterday” begins with some clean vocals, harmonies and melodies, and it crawls out the deep place the previous song occupied. Although it remains melancholy, you can feel flickers of hope trying to break through. “Shades of Gold” is darker and a bit more introspective. It has hardened elements that are augmented with moments of pure beauty, and the harsh and clean vocals wrestle with one another throughout.
“Far from Home” has endless shades of grey, like a succession of cloudy or rainy days that just come one after another and each day you wake up, nothing changes. The harsh vocals seem to accentuate the frustration of so many of us in our current lives. “Forever Yours” is a shorter acoustic led piece that gives you pause from the dull ache of the previous songs and also offers you a branch of hope. “Unbroken Fragments” has steadier tones and seems to live in that world that is between despair and promise. It’s an area that is safe for most people, but it doesn't offer you the chance to test your dreams. “A Velvet Hue” closes the album. It features dark somber sounds that are tempered with melodies at just the right times.
This album is an odyssey through the quiet ache of nostalgia and the fragile persistence of hope. It lingers in the tension, in the muted silver hues of memory, where light struggles to break through but never fully surrenders to the dark. It’s an album for those who have stood at the crossroads of hope and despair and found themselves unwilling to choose a direction. It is for those who understand that some stories do not end with triumph or tragedy, but simply continue, wavering in the twilight.
