Sometimes I think that maybe I am too naive when it comes to Thrash Metal. In today's Metal world where to tag a band with a genre isn't such an easy task anymore, I still believe the info I read about a band that says Thrash in its subgenre's title and that it will actually be it. But in this case, like others I came across in the past, this is not really it. Well maybe partially. Here I stand in front of the debut album of the German band DAVIDIAN, under the name "Our Fear Is There Force", released via Massacre Records. As a long time Thrash fan of both US and EU scenes, what is presented on this album might have a few indications of the modern Thrash sound, but musically it went to extreme directions almost entirely. Don't get this wrong, stepping out of the vocals is fine and all but to what end?

Listening to DAVIDIAN can give a sort of an outline of how Thrash, in its modern version of course, is mixed with modern Hardcore and Death Metal. When it comes to influences I would between on MACHINE HEAD, without paying attention to the band's name, PANTERA, DEATH, SOILWORK and something in the vein of early THE HAUNTED and THE CROWN. If you expected Thrash, you might want to check it again. DAVIDIAN slams with grooves, kick downs but also some of the morbid stuff that Death Metal shares. "Fake Society" is an excellent example of great musicianship along with fine brutal edge and a chaotic nature that did well. "Vicious Circle" was also a nice turnout as if continuing where the former track left off. However in general, I haven't found anything that I can recognize as utterly special in this release either to several melodic verses that sounded as a reminiscent to melodic Death Metal, a number of some chopping rhythm bites that barfed technical features and a few solo outbreaks. There were even moments where it seemed that the rhythm of the vocals was repeating itself over and over but with different lyrics. So what is the point in that honestly? Well at least the sound was to my liking, it really has that feeling of something beastly and foreboding.

"Our Fear Is Their Force" is another claw in the long fingernails of the modern age of Metal in general. DAVIDIAN outstretched their efforts no more than any given band in the modern. They have some positive and promising examples of some massive stuff yet in a way the repetition of procedures isn't helping that much. Nonetheless, the only way from here is up and the first thing that should be done is not calling this Thrash in the full extent of the word.
