From Bandcamp, “MARCH OF SCYLLA is a dark Post-Metal project that explores all the afflictions faced by humanity through ancient myths. For fans of GOJIRA, TESSERACT, SLEEP TOKEN, and ARCHITECTS. Their debut album “Andromeda” will be released on March 7, 2025, via Klonosphere/Season of Mist.” The album has ten songs, and “Ulysses’ Lies” is first. Out of the gate, there are heavy, djenty guitar accents and some backing keys. Melodies are there for the taking, and the atmosphere is spacey, almost as if the band is trying to transport you to a different world. There is a nice balance between sheer weight and melody.

“Death Experience” is much more rowdy, as evidenced by the fast picked riffs and drums in tow. A groovy melody emerges here…the kind that you can bang your head along with. There are still crushingly heavy guitar accents, and the harsh vocals at the end accentuate the weight. “The Royal Way” begins with fat, meaty bass notes and a low and slow riff that matches, along with more backing keyboards. The vocals have a bit of torture imbedded in them, especially when he reaches higher ranges, and that “other world” feeling from the atmosphere is still high in the mix. “To Cassiopeia” is a short, under three-minute song that focuses more on ambiance. It’s a brief pause from the earlier density, and it feels to me like how one might feel floating freely in space.

“Dark Matter” chugs along with muted palm strikes and a pace that allows the riffs to soak in, but it isn’t short on melody either. It toggles back and forth between the two, like someone wrestling with opposite identities. “Storm Dancer” is another song with absolutely brutal low end riffs and harsh vocals, and when he yells, you can feel it in your soul. With the advent of clean vocals, the filth is washed away for just a spell, but the darkness comes rushing back like a Finnish winter. “BlaAst” is another crusher, and the band isn’t short on that type of sound. But within the sometimes massive weight, they also are able to really push melodies as well. This is one area where many bands often fail. “Achilles’ Choice” swirls with a dense undergrowth of branches that seem to stretch out forever, and the towering, chugging riffs return.

“Myrrha” is another dense song, and the sheer amount of boisterousness that the guitars are able to generate is impressive. It rolls forward like a juggernaut, crushing all of the creatures that live on the ground. “Cosmogony” closes the album, and it closes with a good dose of melody, as well as a good deal of thumpings. This was an outstanding debut album for MARCH OF SCYLLA, and it was very well balanced between Progressive Metal, the heavy thuds of Djent and even Death Metal, but all spun with a golden yarn of melody throughout. The compositions were complicated at times, but always accessible to the listener. This is a very promising new band on the scene, and they are here to breathe new life into the scene.
