I miss the Rock bands from the past with all female members, or with a girl singing. Bands like THE RUNAWAYS, SUZY 4, FANNY and GIRLSCHOOL to name a few. I know that we have plenty of great bands nowadays with all girl members, or lead by a girl, but the sound and the attitude is different. Back in the day, our society was much more chauvinistic and a band with girls only, would have more obstacles to reach success. This is still happening nowadays unfortunately but I believe to a lesser degree. These bands always had their unique sound in that era that consists in a crude Rock with touches of psychedelics and a ruff production. This preface is to warn you that there is a band from Portland, Oregon, that seems to be bringing back that sound. The band is a power trio called TIME RIFT and they are releasing their second full album In Flight. The band has a WHITE STRIPES kind of approach with guitars, drums and vocals only. Bass players are human beings and they exist but I cannot see his credit. Just look beside the drummer. The first track “I Am (The Spear)” takes you immediately back to that time of the early flower power movement. Basic rock played with gusto and energy. I can hear a bass in the mix…Who is playing? The singing melodies are well thought out and the singer Domino Monet gives me immediate Stevie Nicks and Grace Slick vibes.
Even Florence Welch comes to mind in songs like “Follow Tomorrow” and the good “Coyote Queen”. Nice Rock riffs from guitar player Justin Kaye that are not made to overwhelm us with dexterity, but to grace us with simple good guitar centred Heavy Rock. The band can go introspective and whimsical as well as you can hear in the soft and short “Into the Stillness”, showing some sadness and vulnerability. The competent drumming is in the hands of Terrica Kleinknecht that commands a more syncopated beat in “Thunder Calling”. Female drummers within the style that comes to my mind at the moment are Megan White and Sandy West. And the heavy riffs keep coming with “The Hunter”, and the next track that names the album “In Flight” that has a great bass presence and melody, and a cool guitar arrangement with some whah whah pedal in the mix. The guitar player Justin Kaye reminds me of Ace Frehley at some points. Basic riffs but played with soul and purpose. The band goes THIN LIZZY style with “Dancing with the Sun” instead of Dancing In The Moonlight. The girls and the boy are back in town with this good and energetic track. The album ends with another banger called “Hellbound”. All the ingredients are here and well cooked. Cool and creative melodies and a no frills Hard Rock in the background. Album downloaded and joint rolled to hear it again
