American Metal
Belial
Belial are without doubt one of the finest bands of New York's Thrash / Speed Metal underground. "Rotten Hell": Belial's debut demo was released back in 1988 capturing the straight into the face, powerful and mind crushing Thrash / Speed Metal of the band. One year later (1989) “Time Falls” demo was released highlighting a more technical approach on the band's remarkable combination of Thrash and Speed Metal. There are also recordings from 1985-1986 that remained unreleased until today. All the above mentioned material is included in this reissue, restored and remastered from scratch by Kostas Scandalis at Infinity Studio (Thessaloniki, Greece).
This album is more a compilation of Belial's various demos from 1985 to 1989 “Time Falls” is the title track for the 1989 demo which is the first demo (Tracks 1 to 4) starting off a fairly mellow track which has a theatrical element, however this is short lived as the track takes off taking no prisoners ,bone crunching guitar riffs, gnarling vocals. ”Black River” over 8 minutes long is next up very dark, atmospheric mellow but then when you least expect it explodes into that New York style Thrash Metal sound. ”Melt Down” has the same song structure guitar solo intro which is great but then comes an onslaught of fast aggressive drums, high range vocals, gritty riffs. ”Incinerate The Infected” is aggressive from the offset but I feel the track is too long winded and I find it monotonous, maybe if it had been cut shorter it would have been a better track. Tracks 5 to 9 are taken from the 1988 “Rotten Hell Demo”.
”Blowout S.A.D. “ clock in at over 6 minutes long but is a great catchy Thrash Metal track catchy chorus, great riffs, rhythm and melody technicality and vocals which can also be said for “The Outcast” which are the best two tracks on the album. Tracks 10 to 12 are from the 1985/86 demos “Die Hard” which again is fast and aggressive in nature, the dynamics of the riffs, the rhythm could be improved to make the track more powerful.” American Metal” the shortest track on the album at just under 3 minutes long is a much better track, its powerful, the melody is more tighter fast and ferocious, nice solo and vocals. ”The Secret Of The Wind” is the bonus track which is by a band called Psych which is post Belial. Released in 1990 from their “Fear Of Fantasy” demo which is 10 minutes in length which is Prog/Metal has some great melodies, vocals with some keyboard parts which make the track atmospheric which I actually preferred to the rest of the tracks.
This will be a welcome release for fans of the 80's New York Thrash/Speed Metal scene to add to their collection. But for me parts of the album for me were pretty good ,but parts were not. Some of the tracks had too long an intro for me or were too long (apart from the bonus track “The Secret Of The Wind”) that I lost interest, it just didn't grab me enough and pull me in unfortunately.
