The Somnifier

This was an enjoyable album, and I found it to have a gritty mix of some harder songs, and some more lighthearted ones that are still tinged with that depressions sense of evergrey.

Hailing from Australia, this Doom Metal duo formed in 2011. Their newest album is presented here, their fourth, and it is titled “The Somnifier.” It has ten songs. The title track is first. It’s a relatively slow grind, with heavy drum beats, fuzzy guitars, and thick bass. As is sometimes the case with Doom Metal, it bleeds over into the Stoner category at times, especially with its psychedelic sound. “Draining the Labyrinth” has a heavier, and grittier sound. So far, however, there are no vocals, but the music does make a mark.

“Eat the Day” has a bit of a funky groove in the main riff, and it’s off and running with the heavy beat of drums, and in come the vocals. They are about what you might expect for the genre…gritty and without frills. “Recurring Nightmare” has a slow and gloomy cadence and sound, as the ominous title suggests. The vocals are shaky—like you might expect when you wake up from a nightmare. “Image Rehearsal Reaction” is the lengthy song on the album, clocking in at ten minutes. It begins slowly, with mist still hanging on thickly in the morning. Brief and short spoken words appear every now and again. It picks up in pace, and the groove is stone cold.

“False Awakening Continuum” is a shorter song that has some strings in it…simulated violin perhaps? It sort of walks that like between being awake and being asleep, and all of the tricks that you mind can play on you during that state. “Body and Soul” closes the album, with another fuzzy riff that swings with melody. Mason’s vocals are low, and somewhat sultry, singing matter-of-factly while psychedelica swirls in the background. Overall, this was an enjoyable album, and I found it to have a gritty mix of some harder songs, and some more lighthearted ones that are still tinged with that depressions sense of evergrey.
