Warpstormer
WARPSTORMER, South London Thrash Doomers, released their debut EP, “Here Comes Hell,” in 2022. It grabbed a fair amount of attention. This year they release their debut full-length album, “Warpstormer,” on November 29 and it’s bound to stir up even more alarm. While the cover, and even their monicker, suggest a fuzzed-out Stoner trip, what we get is a ripping Thrash attack underpinned with down-tuned sensibilities of Doom.
The album is built like an Evil Knievel ramp with the first track, “Black Herald,” easing us in with a 1:51 instrumental and the final track, “The Edge of Time,” catapulting us into the void with an 11 minute 37 second warpdrive slingshot. Overall, the riffage is fast and mean throughout. There are a few ambient intros but for the most part this album is always on the move. Richard Morgan’s vocals are too rough to be clean but also not harsh enough to be guttural. We’ll just call ‘em raspy, though Simon Doggett (Bass, vocals) and Richard do get after some eerie harmonies in “Beyonder.”
My favorite things about this album are James Loh’s relentless assault on the skins and Adam Davies’ unrestrained guitar solos. By calling James’ style relentless, I’m not quite being accurate. There is this eclectic jazz signature he throws in there that is utterly compelling. Give a good listen to “A Liar’s Crown” and you’ll see what I mean.
All in all, there’s a lot going on with “WARPSTORMER.” They remind me of THE SWORD gone Thrash. Best tracks are “A Liar’s Crown” for the reasons noted above; “Beyonder” for its cosmic intro and outro and all its savage innards (again, Loh just gets shit crazy); and the final track, “The Edge of Time,” for the ultimate send off.
I think I might have been expecting Black Metal when I selected this album for review. What I got was unexpected but completely enjoyed. I hope this band gets enough attention to keep them going. We need more WARPTSTOMER in the universe.
