Tombs Of The Blind Dead
Summoning Death
SUMMONING DEATH hailing from Cancun, Mexico were formed in 2014. The Death Metal band released so far one EP and two full-length albums. Album number three is “Tombs Of The Blind Dead” and it was recorded, mixed, and mastered by guitarist Ricardo Gil at Toxic Beach Studio in Cancun. The album has a length of about 42 minutes, and it was released via Mexican Death Metal specialists Chaos Records. The album starts with a cinematic intro, which includes a spoken word part leading into the title track and this one starts frantic! It is a traditional Death Metal hammering and a mixture of parts of insane pace and mid-tempo part. The female growling vocals are most often at the deep end of the guttural range. For the chorus line, there is background vocal support. The riffing is direct and punishing, and the melodies are blood-freezing. There are a couple of contributing lead guitar solos at blistering pace. “Tombs Of The Blind Dead” was released as video, and the YouTube link is provided below. The Death Metal carnage continues with “The Killer’s Masterpiece” and this one is a mid-tempo track. Most notably, the sound of the guitars is inspired by the typical Swedish chainsaw sound. The break starts near the end of the track at a measured tempo and is driven by demonic laughter. The Swedish sound becomes even more prominent in “Vly” as besides the typical guitar sound, the typical tempo and rhythm of Swedish Death Metal is introduced. However, this is enriched by a few blast-beat attacks in between. The deep-lying growls are supported by higher pitched background screams. The break at a measured tempo delivers grim melodies. “Vly” is one of the best album tracks.
“Sleepaway Camp” starts right away with aggressive guitar riffing and the growl at mid-tempo. The guitar riffs are simple and direct, while the vocals sound blood-freezing. There are switches in tempo and rhythm throughout the track. The second part is played at crazy pace. The break delivers a doom-laden atmosphere at a slow tempo where the lead guitars and the vocals are the main contributors, all driven by the riffing and some relentless double-bass drumming. “Sleepaway Camp” is with more than seven minutes playing time one of the longest album tracks. “Humongous” is a mid-tempo track driven by the chainsaw sound of the guitars, the deep growls, and the double-bass. The track has different elements in it. Besides the merciless Death Metal hammering and a bone-chilling darkness in the melodies, there are also a few catchier parts in it, especially during the first part of the track. “The Outing” starts with a short chilling intro, transitioning into a brutal and hammering at mid-tempo. The melodic framework of the track is once again spine-chilling with the lead guitars delivering doomy melodies. The guitar riffing is simple and direct. There are a few tempi breaks during the track with some faster parts followed by parts at a measured tempo. The chainsaw guitar sound and the vocals sit on top of it and drive the track forward.
After a short guitar intro at mid-tempo, “Killer Party” transitions into another fast hammering with direct and aggressive guitar riffs and brutal deep growls, all intensified by various blast-beat attacks and double-bass thunderstorms. The lead guitars and the background screams add to a freezing atmosphere of track. “Killer Party” is a relatively short affair compared to all other tracks. The album finishes with “Intruder” and it is a permanent switch between a doom-laden sound at a measured tempo and an aggressive fast pummelling of the listener. “Intruder” is a merciless Death Metal attack and a great way to end the album. SUMMONING DEATH deliver an excellent Death Metal album. “Tombs Of The Blind Dead” offers an outstanding mixture of brutality and darkness. Inspired by a Swedish chainsaw sound of the guitars, relentless drumming, and brutal deep-lying growling vocals, the album is a unique piece of traditional Death Metal. The blood-freezing sound is kept excellently together by vocalist Abigail Paz, who has an excellent performance throughout. The album is well produced. “Tombs Of The Blind Dead” is a must-listen for every Death Metal fan.
