Songs of Blood and Mire

Spectral Wound

This wasn’t a bad album per se, but within the annals of Black Metal, artists have a wide variety of boundaries to take advantage of. In this case, the band just wanted to stick with the FWOBM sound, and that’s a shame.

From Bandcamp, “An elegy of the void, seething with the venom and clamour of an ever-emptying world. Music for the poisoned, the futile, the debauched and profane. The blooming of a flower of corruption, torn by cold winds.” The album has seven songs, and “Fevers and Suffering” is first. The opening sequence is quite chaotic…to the point where the music is hard to make out. It settles into a dark and muddy groove pretty quickly however, with horrid vocal screams. I hate to characterize it like this, but this is pretty standard FWOBM inspired music. “At Wine-Dark Midnight in the Mouldering Halls” has a similar sound. One thing that the band is good it is creating a totally uncompromising sound, but beyond that, not much else.

“Aristocratic Suicidal Black Metal” has a nice groove it, where the riff and drums meet in unison. But the vocal screams outweigh much of the music, as do the drums. The result is a blurring of lines making the music hard to hear. “The Horn Marauding” is aptly titled, because marauding is another thing that the band does very well. They just press the gas pedal to the floor and don’t ever let up. It doesn’t make for a very enjoyable listen in that regard. “Less and Less Human, O Savage Spirit” is another overgrown sound that burns hotly and quickly. The bass notes are great here but that is the only strong thing about the song.

“A Coin Upon the Tongue” is a nod to the boatman on the river Styx, who carries souls to the underworld when you give him the proper coin. It fits in well with themes of the album, but as a piece of music, it isn’t very original. “Twelve Moons in Hell” closes the album, and it’s another pedal to the metal sound, not very distinguishable from the others. Overall, this wasn’t a bad album per se, but within the annals of Black Metal, artists have a wide variety of boundaries to take advantage of. In this case, the band just wanted to stick with the FWOBM sound, and that’s a shame.
