From the record label’s website, “The new album is his fifth studio album since his debut in 2007. He also released a live album in 2017 and his “almost-instrumental” album “Voices” under his own name in 2022. Wallner never seems to run out of ideas or the desire to produce, despite his main band RPWL, his own label Gentle Art of Music, his recording studio and many other projects as a producer and guitarist. You can hear this inspiration in the songs: they sound fresh and unspent, they are very varied, have hard and soft tones, are sometimes driving and quite complex rock songs and sometimes ballads. All these elements come together on “The Hunting Party” to form a very special unity.”
The title track is first. The opening tones are somewhat sad, but the melody is strong, and you can hear Kalle’ guitar sing aloud. From there, it’s a smooth ride over mostly flat roads with occasional hills, and it makes me just want to cruise with the top down. “The Stranger” has brighter melodies mostly from the major chords and a distinct groove to it. It’s a simple melody, but sometimes those are the best, and it sticks in your head. The chorus is catchy, and so far, this album is a wonderful hit on the senses. “Spiders” has harder and more energized chords and a fast moving pace. Kalle uses his brush to mostly paint clear skies, but they are cloudy from time to time, and when they are not hanging out there for the taking, they are what I would call introspective.
“Boiling Point” has a smooth and funky sound, with a distinct rhythm as well as piano notes, and the vocal harmonies are strong in the chorus. “In the Blink of an Eye” has a very strong emotional quality to the music. The vocals that begin the song are quite expressive, and the guitars are in tow. You can feel a big crescendo coming around the corner, and when it does, it is glorious. The lead guitar work is also excellent, following the melody line perfectly. “Breathless” has darker tones and even some dangerous moments, especially in the snarl of the vocals at times. The sound is still quite catchy, but the song hunkers down into the shadows more. “When the Party’s Over” closes the album, and it has gentle and emotional sounds. I definitely hear some PINK FLOYD influence in this song as well, and it drips with feeling.
This album stands as a testament to the power of music crafted with both integrity and substance. The songwriting is rich, full of layers that reflect an unwavering commitment to artistic honesty. Each riff, melody, and vocal line is carefully constructed, with no wasted moments or empty gestures. There is a depth here that can’t be manufactured—each song tells a story, delivering an experience that is not just heard but felt. The lyrics, too, are marked by introspection and sincerity, reflecting a band that has something real to say and refuses to compromise on their vision. This is a collection of music that speaks to the core, leaving a lasting impact long after the final note fades.
