ASENBLUT is a German Folk Metal band that incorporates elements of traditional German, Celtic, and Scandanavian music into their sound. They are often regarded as one of the pioneers of the German folk metal genre and have been active on the scene since the early 2000’s. The word “Asenblut”  is a combination of two German words; “Asen”, which is a German translation of the Old Norse word “Aesir”. Which refers to a group of gods in Norse mythology (such as Odin and Thor), while “Blut” means “blood” in German. So, the name “ASENBLUT” can be translated to “BLOOD OF THE GODS”, or “BLOOD OF THE AESIR” in English. “Entfesselt”, their newest album, means “Unleashed”, “Released”, “or “Liberated”. Words are so fascinating to me, different languages and the meanings of different words. As a writer myself, I find the choice of band name and album name to be both an interesting and strong choice. “Entfesselt” features 10 songs and was released August 2, 2024. “Entfesselt” continues ASENBLUT’S signature sound of blending German, Scandanavian, and Celtic Folk Music with Heavy Metal. Lyrically, the album draws on themes related to German mythology and culture, as is common in ASENBLUT’S style. The band clearly draws inspiration from AMON AMARTH and other similar styles.  

“Das Ende der Götter” - The title translates to “The End of the Gods”, and this song explores themes of myth and legend, a common theme in ASENBLUT’S music. This song opens with a heavy, brooding instrumental intro that sets the tone for the songs scope. The band’s signature fusion of Germanic and Scandanavian music with Metal is clear from the beginning. As the song progresses the tempo builds and there is moments of high-energy metal that contrast effectively with slower, more introspective passages. Overall, this song is a powerful and atmospheric start to the album. “Entfesselt” - This song continues the album’s mythological themes and incorporates ASENBLUT’S signature fusion style. This song features strong, energetic guitar riffs and a driving drumbeat that sets a fast tempo. The lyrics are sung in German, and while not available online to translate, they likely refer to the bands commonly used mythological themes. “Arm in Arm” - This song begins with a heavy drum beat and melodic guitar riffs, setting a solid foundation for the song's rhythm. The lyrics are primarily in German and sung in a powerful and intense manner, reflecting the song’s theme of strength and unity. The song is characterized by a catchy chorus and heavy driving sound, which is typical of ASENBLUT’S style.  

“Wölfe des Meeres” - The title translates to “Wolves of the Sea”, and the song is characterized by its heavy, driving rhythm and intense Folk Metal sound. The lyrics are, again. Primarily in German, but they speak of Wolves that are said to inhabit the sea. This song features powerful guitar riffs and drumming. “Blut und Sand” - The title translates to “Blood and Sand” and carries the heavy sound and intense, powerful guitar riffs. The German sung lyrics speak of the duality of life and death with references to the power and inevitability of both.
