Loreweaver - Imperviae Auditiones album cover

This offering by LOREWEAVER, an Italian Progressive Metal band, took me a little while to warm up to. On my first listen, the first few tracks didn't really do much for me, but the album definitely improved as it went on. Now don't get me wrong, "Imperviae Auditiones" is a good Prog album, and is without a doubt a Progressive album. Only one track - "Avoid Feelings" - clocks in at less than six minutes, and is incidentally the instrumental track of the album.

Barbara Rubin's vocals are very good, taking the listener on a journey through the story of each song. The Progressive elements of the album are also excellent - the 'twiddly' bits which are associated with this genre aren't overdone so the listener isn't sitting there thinking 'when is this going to end?' Indeed, every member of the band is a talented musician, and they all get their time in the spotlight with wonderful solos. They all come together very nicely but, to my ears at least, it just seems to be missing something to give it that impact and make it stay with you.

My personal favorite track is the beautiful "That Night". It's the simplest song on the album, but it is also the strongest, due to the power and emotion put into every word and note. Rubin's singing credentials really shine through, and Marcenaro's keyboards' skills are a real highlight of the album. The elegance of this song is in its simplicity - it says a lot without being your 'typical' Progressive song. Although that's not to say it's my favorite because it's not the usual kind of thing you'd hear from a Progressive Metal band, because it still does have these elements, once the guitars and drums are brought in about halfway through. This song has an excellent solo but my favorite one has to be the stunning guitar solo from "Follow The Weaver".

Overall, "Imperviae Auditiones" is a solid album, and I definitely enjoyed listening to it. I just felt that although there were many flashes of brilliance, the band could maybe have built more on these to create something a bit special. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for something a bit different for their CD collection.
