It was a great surprise to hear a retro material in the vein WHITESNAKE / DEEP PURPLE through a present view. The keyboards gave the main tone like in the old days of URIAH HEEP. I believe that guts are truly needed to create an album with the clear roots of the 70's Hard Rock. The crew members here did what they wanted while not surrendering to today's modern Rock.

Unlike DEEP PURPLE, which razed their musicians to become legends each and every one in his area, VOODOO HIGHWAY seemed to have a lack in performing good lead guitar solos, I didn't feel that they brought the songs to the high point of excitement just as it was on the song like "The fire".

VOODOO HIGHWAY's singer's voice fitted well with their style. He has those high notes that Ian Gillian used to have and it is a shame that he unleash those rather few times, but he sure got the right attitude to share at least a peak on each song. To tell you the truth, I was very astonished from his high pitch in the song "Window", which is one of their best. The chorus has such a strong groove that makes it so powerful and there is a nice battle between the keyboards to the guitars.

The songs are very catchy and it's easy to get addicted to those guitar riffs which fluently rolled. I expected more out of the ballad "Heaven With No Stars". The chorus wasn't strong enough for a power ballad, it didn't seem to give the peak moment of a ballad. I expected the chorus to be more interesting, for example like on the WHITESNAKE song"Is This Love". Their next track "Gasoline Woman" saved the bell, the song has so much energy and groove, the chorus explodes and it showed that VOODOO HIGHWAY know how to make powerful  Hard rock.
I am not a big fan of keyboards but here the key work is outstanding, it is not easy to enter to the big shoes of 70's Hard Rock and they surely did it right and on the exact tune. The production took me us back to the days when BLACK SABBATH and LED ZEPPLIN ruled the world. VOODOO HIGHWAY achieved the sound they wanted to gain, and did it perfectly.
