Death Metal from South America is what we have today kids. A duo of crazy metalheads from none other than Santiago de Chile in South America. We know how heavy South Americans can be and I hope this is no different. The name of the duo band is COFFIN CURSE and they have released their most recent work The Continuous Nothing via memento Mori Records. Despite COFFIN CURSE being created in 2012, this is their only second full album after Ceased To Be from 2020. The new album delivers a punch in the face Death Metal bathed in the nineties and bringing back memories of bands like DEICIDE and NAPALM DEATH. Max Neira took care of the guitars, bass and the vocals leaving the complicated drumming to Carlos Fuentes. Max’s vocal range is a deep guttural growl conveying a single emotion, rage.
The lyrical themes are not understandable to my ears and I was unable to find the lyrics. I will challenge anyone that can sing a single line just by listening. While the entire album is a cohesive and relentless Death Metal journey, a few tracks stand out for their composition approach and impact. "Thin The Herd" that starts the album, is a perfect blend of speed and musical complexity, showcasing the band's technical skills. Despite understanding the genre (I think), the only disappointing aspect is the single tone vocal performance. I like my Death Metal with a little more vocal variation in tones but I understand that a lot of fans of the genre will be just fine with it. "Mauled by Unseen Atrocities” ( I love these song titles!) does not slow things down but has a more atmospheric approach, featuring haunting vocal lines and a crushing guitar riff that leaves a lasting impression.
The closing track, "The Dead's Deafening Silence" slows things down with the crunchiest guitar riff that encapsulates early SLAYER ending the album on a note of haunting beauty. Good tracks like "Bacchanal of the Mortal " and "Reeking Filth of Ages" can be found on youtube, but just the audio as we still have no live shows recorded from this duo that I could find. From a band that has been operating since 2012, it is strange that no live performances were ever registered in video. Just hire a bass or guitar player and hit the road guys! The Continuous Nothing is a good album and I believe it contributes, and is faithful to the death metal genre. It combines technical proficiency, atmospheric depth that not many Death Metal albums manage to achieve nowadays. Listen to "Primitive Doctrines Crushed" and you will see what I mean. Fans of the genre will find much to appreciate, from the intricate musicianship to the relentless monotonic gutural. However, in my opinion, a band has to be capable of reproducing the best they can their studio work in a live setting. I am not saying they never played live, but if they did, they should have at least a fan video of it and I was surprised I was not able to find it. On album reviews, I always like to look how the band performs live and I just hope it is not one of those bands that just produce albums.
