Wyvern - Lord Of Winter album cover

WYVERN has their fair share of Progressive Power Metal, I found some "cheerful" moments in their music when almost everything reminded me of the happy like Italian Power Metal, yet, there was a bit of aggressiveness here and there. When the production was concerned, there was too much reverb in the vocal channel on "Lord Of Winter", which really annoyed me and sometimes I felt like the singer was swallowed deep within the music therefore causing not to understand the singing.

In comparison to the first, "Twin Factory" was much more aggressive and had a MEGADETH taste in some parts. Same on with the next track which I didn't quite understand what was the direction that the band selected on following. The singing melody was a suffering experience from first moment and not something interesting. It was hard for me to remember one exciting moment in the songs because they all went to way too many directions. The guitars sounded very loud and too much with tons of gain in them which very affected on the listening. The mix process was very bad and also the overall production of the entire material.

Nevertheless, there were some great moments like the flute that came in "Reflections" while its melody also turned out quite nicely and combined well with keyboards. "The Other One" is a good example of when the vocals were heard in the front of the music. With those compliments I have to imply that with the high technical level of the musicians, the songs didn't reach to the point they should had been. The balance between the vocals and the rest of channels on the ballad "Winter Tale" didn't seem to be coordinated. There was a feeling that there was a lack of synchronization. The better musical parts were the heaviest forms that had a twist of Thrash Metal like in their song "Shine" that once again shocked with its aggressive manner.

In the end, the "Lord Of Winter" album has some great moments but in general it didn't succeed on making any stand. I liked the combination of the harsher Metal ideas here and the similarity to several Thrash legends' riffs which bumped here and there in the songs. Furthermore, and it is sad for me to admit it, I found that the album was nothing more than another regular album and not something that marked a spot on me.
