The Silver Line

Oni

Metalcore critics could argue that this style is on the wane, but I find it is still strong in bands like ONI. The short songs don’t give a lot of time for development or exploration, but still, as they stand, they are catchy, and that is half the battle about music in general in my opinion. The heavy electronic edge gives the songs a polished quality, and “The Silver Line” is also full of guest vocalists. You won’t easily forget the hooks anytime soon.

In modern times, the demonic ONI figure of Japanese Folklore transformed into a personification of protection, often adorning rooftops or leading festive parades to ward off evil. In this same spirit, the crushing but melodic aggressive music of ONI, the band, is an empowering weapon. ONI casts out the cruel demons of self-hatred, addiction, and whatever destructive obstacles one might face.

“Silhouette” is first. Heavy, melodic, electronic notes lead off the song. The vocals are harmonized, and the background filled, and the song has a catchy, Poppy sound that is quite accessible. “Spark” is even more catchy, and the band makes no bones about their accessible sound, nor their punishing bottom end, and they are equally adept at both. “Underneath My Skin” is another winner. So far, the band is able to create songs with their own identity, but also within the confines of the album. They push a big, rich chorus here as the song clocks in at under three minutes and features the talents of Kellin Quinn.

“Cyanide” has a heavier and more punishing bottom end, but still those electronic elements are very full. This song also features some harsh vocals, more in the tradition of Metalcore music. “The Dread” features Justin Hill, and it has a dangerous and harrowing edge to it, with downtuned guitars and punishing drumming. “Aura” goes the other way, with harmonized guitars and vocals, and a catchier sound. Although the genre boundaries are not very forgiving, the band works well within those limitations. Howard Jone’s voice is unmistakable as well. “Armageddon” has a brutal bottom end with harsh vocals that abound and features the vocal talents of Michael Lessard. The juxtaposition of the weighted sound with catchy melodies is the key to their sound.

Overall, I found this to be an excellent album.
