One early and gloomy morning heading by train northbound I was clear to say this was the greatest record of all time. The mellow psychedelic songs with a really floating structure beating slowly and gnawing into my mind bit by bit setting me off to the dream world. It is really amazing when you think about it, how someone could have a vision about this, to create the sparse arrangements and create the atmosphere delivered on "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I". I can't for my life see how this all came together and how it all stays together with tiny recognizable elements, most of the time a very careful guitar harmony, on other occasions something else. And what I really like about it is that they've created this trance like groove with psychedelic elements without using much more than the original instruments.

The music is described as Doom or Drone, for me that don't feel all right to label EARTH like that, now not disrespect to any of the genres, I just don't feel it describes the music in full.
I suppose it's a trademark for Doom and Drone to have extremely long songs. In one way the songs do feel long, with all rights. The title track "Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I" clocks in on over 20 minutes and my favorite "Father Midnight" over 12. The strange thing is, even though there's not much action in the songs they never get boring. For any genre of Metal, it takes a lot from a band to write these mastodon songs and keep the listeners interest throughout the tunes. EARTH manages with grace!

Then of course, on any other day "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I" could be the album that freaks you out completely. No matter how excellent the music is performed, the wrong day this is painfully slow and stressful to listen to.
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that this is my first encounter with EARTH but since I found it on the right day it sure was a band that made a huge impression on me so this will most certainly not be the last. I really do encourage everyone to check this out, even if the description don't fit it still can be a trip away from reality, stress and pressure, at least if "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I" is picked up on the right day. Who knows, it might even work everyday!
