Infinity Overture - The Infinite Overture Part 1 album cover

INFINITY OVERTURE is progressive metal band from Denmark. They have a lot of talent, but they lack direction. You have beautiful vocals by Kimmie Nielsen, only to have them ruined by horrifically bad growls done by the man responsible for forming the group, Niels Vejlyt. The first three songs are really good, but it only goes downhill from there. They also have some furiously fast shredding that is remarkably out of place. It simply comes out of nowhere without warning then stops as suddenly as it began, with no rhyme or reason as to why. Niels needs to learn to show some self control. The song "Evernight" begins beautifully with Kimmie singing the vocals only to be thoroughly ruined by the obnoxious growls of Niels. I am not against death metal growls, but these are bad by any standard. It's almost as if he's trying to shoo any potential listener away. I hate to say it, but the growls are simply terrible.

The solos are all overdone. There is virtually no harmony, just frantically played notes as if it were Michael Angelo Batio trying to show off his bright new shining guitar instructional video, and it doesn't work. Where there should be melody, there is only noise. "Secrets" is yet another example of a furious guitar assault that goes nowhere. The soling in this song is more acceptable than some of the others, yet it is still too much. The lone saving grace of this album is Kimmie Nielsen. She has a very bright future if this project fails, she should be in high demand. I really enjoy her voice, it is truly outstanding. The talent for a good album is here. Niels shows he is capable of singing clean vocals that are quite enjoyable. The production is good. It is also obvious that Niels is an excellent guitar player, if only he didn't try to ram that fact down your throat. There is also some good drumming and the bass blends in very well. What they need is an iron fisted producer to lay the hammer down and dictate policy. I honestly believe it can be done.

Overall, INFINITY OVERTURE is too much of a vanity project of the founder, Niels Vejlyt. If they can overcome this fact, then they will go somewhere. The market is flooded with good bands. I believe Niels was trying to set his band apart from the rest, but by doing so he also went too far. A man needs to know his limitations. There is some really good music in here, but it is surrounded by too much pomp and over playing, and over singing. Hopefully they will learn from this experience and mature into something much better.
