Ascension Of The Entombed
Overthrow
A black metal band known as OVERTHROW has been around since their formation in 2011 and they have been led by their lead vocalist and guitarist JAY WHITE, as well as other musicians who appeared on their various releases starting with their demo in 2013 titled WASTED EXISTENCE. After this came their two track EP titled NOW FEAR THE MERCENARY which was released three years after their first demo, in 2016 as the band then had not produced any new material until 2021 when they released two singles. These two singles would then be featured on their debut album titled STRIKE DOWN THE SAVIOUR as it had nine tracks altogether and JACK SMITHERS appeared on the album as well as the EP before as guitarist/backing vocalist.
The album was when drummer SCOTT LINDSAY, guitarist ALEX HARRIS and bassist ALIN IORDACHE were brought into the lineup as the album made a very good impression, after listening to their previous EP also, I found this sound so cool with thrash and black metal influences that can be heard of course. Electrifying guitar riffs, blistering drum patterns and screamer vocals make their debut album stand out even more, but now the band have paved way for another EP, titled ASCENSION OF THE ENTOMBED. The EP is four tracks long and has been released through Redefining Darkness Records as we can look ahead now into this release with anticipation and excitement, the first track which is “Ascension Of The Entombed”.
The first track has a short section for a speech and black metal soundscape, as all aspects of the band are in full swing for lead guitar producing riveting riffs with some vibrato as well as vocals screeching loudly. Galloping guitars and drums with vocals on top charge through with confidence and continuity, as there is time also for an instrumental breakdown as we are gradually going into the next track which is “Lords Of Xibalba”. As we hear pulsating drum patterns with eagerness and lead guitar bringing out the mid range end of the tone of this track, there are a few opportunities for vocals to make their mark with a jealous rage. An instrumental break comes in with drums and guitar going wild and projecting the violent discord all over the place.
Guitar vibrato and screamo vocals on top of the lightning speed drumming is continuing on as we head into the next track which is “Ruptured Nebula”. This track opens with a slow and mellow guitar riff as drums do come into the fore with vocals also joining in, as the tempo is thick and fast, as the madness continues on with loud clanging in the background. As the band charges on a rampage bulldozing its way through then we can move onto the final track of this EP, this last track is “Caustic Vengeance”. As the lead guitar rings out from the previous track, with cymbal hits also creating the gradual crescendo, then drums simply stamp their feet with a heavy thump and then another blistering drum pattern is active. Vocals enter the frame and remain as deadly and monstrous with such sinister words of disgust and possession.
Guitar leads the way next with a short solo as drums play along, as before vocals initiate the transitions each time, as we come to the closing curtain of this EP. More drumming that is simply frightening with the black metal soundscape of lead guitar as well as vocals, which makes this the best way to close out the EP. So the two musicians that played on this EP were actually founding member JAY WHITE on lead vocals/guitar and drummer SCOTT LINDSAY as they made a great duo providing such style and talent in this EP, so do check these guys out, if you’re into black metal and looking for another band to listen to. The drums are hidden in some way, I would have liked to hear more of their sound, maybe more clarity, but the vocals and lead guitar were spot on, very much on the right path of how black metal should sound.
