From their EPK, “Motivated by a desire to explore their own artistic style and venture into new territories, SYLVATICA embarked on the creation of their third album, titled “Cadaver Synod.” This album delves into the dark tales of the Middle Ages, incorporating elements such as the haunting sounds of church organs, theremin, and Gregorian chants. The result is a set of gloomy and atmospheric compositions, enriched by the addition of Hammond organs and synthesizers, evoking a nostalgic 70s vibe with occasional Doom influences.” The album has eight songs.

“Strife” is first. The organ hits you first, followed by a doomy and slow riff a-la BLACK SABBATH. Lead guitars carry the same melody over top, and a quicker pace ensues, with harsh vocals, and a healthy dose of keyboards. They quartet runs a pretty tight ship. “Papa Poltergeist” has a nice mix of guitars and keyboards, and it’s obvious that the latter will play a prominent role in their music. The vocal chants are a nice touch also. “Titivillus” has a nifty cadence where the melody climbs up and down. Harsh vocals follow, along with delicate cleans in the background. Like the other two songs, it has a sort of anthemic quality.

“Pope Innocent VIII” is a bit slower, and heavier. With peaks of sound, the band uses crescendos for an extra layer of effect. Their musicianship is quite good as well. “Song of the Leper” is organ and piano forward, and the sound is charming. Harmonic leads join in, and the backing chants add depth. The song also has a momentous aura. “Scapegoat” has creepy sounding keyboards in the opening sequence with a good deal of vibrato. This song is also more dissonant and harrowing, but the power that the band is able to draw from their music is noteworthy.

“In the Eyes of God” sets a burning pace of fire that trails behind it as it moves, and accents are used to mark passages where they want them to stand out. Overall, the album was very well done and packed with flavor. Sometimes the flavor are sweet, while other times bitter, but always presented with a high level of musicianship. Not being familiar with the band before listening to this album, it is tightly wound and confidently prepared.
