Echoes of Yore
Lord of Shadows
From their EPK, “Bowed beneath the weight of sorrows I walk into the sunset, with the ghosts of love and loss waltzing sadly by my side; ephemeral visions of memory that whisper endlessly of their heartbreak. The sun sinks lower, its crimson light bleeding into the distant hills, like the blood of those forsaken and betrayed. In unknowing innocence, I clothed their delicate frames in the soft flesh of my lost love and christened them with her sacred name. When they pushed their way through the mirage, with eyes full of devotion, I turned away and looked to the horizon and the wounded, dying daystar once more. So I walk on with my troupe of accusing spirits, searching for an echo of a voice, silenced so many years before.” The album has seven songs.
“Her Lips Were Poetry and Doom” opens the album. It’s a mood-setting piece, with piano, grievous words, and solemn tones. Harsh vocals bring another level of despondence to the music. “Faith of Thy Beloved” has clean female vocal harmonies, along with clean and harsh male ones. The music is slow, deliberate, and sorrowful, especially the strings. The riffs are held for long stretches as well, furthering the feelings of hopelessness and lore. “At the End of Our Eclipse” has a similar sound…a push and pull from delicate clean vocals with piano to passages with heavy riffs and vocals. All the while, a massive weight builds underneath.
“She Was but an Echo of Yore” has a similar pattern. Some solitary lead guitar adds some texture to the song, but the pattern is becoming a bit too familiar. “Through Memories, I Gave Her Life” is the longest on the album, clocking in at nine minutes. It has a heavier structure from the main riff plodding through the peaks of light. Rumbling underneath, it never stops. The pace picks up at the halfway mark, and it jogs towards the finish line with a little more feeling. “If the Tears are Forgotten” has some tender and nostalgic tones. The clean female vocal harmonies are very well done. The gruff male vocals and heavy riff try to take this feeling away, but it stands.
“Your Blood Weighs Heavy” closes the album. It’s a short, instrumental closer which highlights many of the tones heard on the album. Overall, much of the album was grey and melancholic, which can be quite charming if you know what to listen for. Although some of the songs in the middle did get a bit repetitive, the sound is very nice, polished, and done with good production. If the band can vary some of the songs a bit, the album would go from good to excellent for me.
