Radikal Rats

Essence of Datum

Playful tones are augmented with darker ones, keeping the listener ever guessing. The one thing I wish the album had more of, however, is dynamism. Like I mentioned before, some more swells in the music would contribute greatly to that.

From their EPK, “Prepare to immerse yourself in a symphony of genres as "Radikal Rats" defies convention, weaving together the intricate tapestry of modern Prog Metal with the nostalgic allure of vintage synth pop. This album isn't just music; it's a sonic adventure through uncharted territories, where pulsating rhythms meet ethereal harmonies, and raw energy converges with timeless melodies.” The album has seven songs.

“Supresonic Soul Injector” is first. The first word that comes to mind is “exploratory.” The guitars reach out, in and around, in a tentative manner, surveying the land. “Y domination” has a healthy serving of keys to round out the sound. Again, the guitars are somewhat tentative in that they hold back, and make you feel that they will explode, but don’t. It’s OK…I am up for the mysteries. “Universe 25” has another nice dose of keys. So far, the balance between guitars and keys is well played. At times, I hear that famous Terminator sound to their music…from the soundtrack…especially in the keyboards/electronica.

“Hector et Véronique” is again more exploratory, and I am learning to accept the journey and not the destination in their music. Some swells might bring more dynamism to the table, but I like what I hear so far. “Bias” is even shrouded more, and this is now an obvious feature on the album. “Jukel ov Agony” drips with solemn tones, and tones of lament. But they are soon cast aside for someone who got back up, spit out a tooth, and is ready for another round. “Rodent Rebellion” closes the album. I hate to sound repetitive, but it’s the exploratory sound that is interwoven throughout the album that is the main feature.

Overall, this was a pleasant listening experience. The music isn’t overly complicated, so it’s easy to assimilate. Playful tones are augmented with darker ones, keeping the listener ever guessing. The one thing I wish the album had more of, however, is dynamism. Like I mentioned before, some more swells in the music would contribute greatly to that.
