MEGAPORT FESTIVAL, the only large-scale rock festival in the world during the pandemic will happen in Taiwan!
Last year, major annual events around the world were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, including almost every major music festival. Although Taiwan's condition is relatively stable, considering the risk of a local epidemic, many events have also been restricted or cancelled.
Next weekend (3/27 & 3/28), held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, MEGAPORT FESTIVAL might be the first large-scale rock festival held as scheduled after the outbreak of the global pandemic. The festival is headlined by CHTHONIC.
MEGAPORT FESTIVAL was founded in 2006 by Freddy Lim, lead singer of Chthonic. Freddy left the organizing team after being elected as a member to the Taiwanese Parliament in 2016. However, while his current focus remains in politics, he still tried his best to participate in the very music festival that he founded.
MEGAPORT FESTIVAL attracts tens of thousands of people every year, featuring a line-up of well-known East Asian bands from Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong, and occasionally groups from Europe and the United States. Due to the pandemic, this year's lineup mainly features Taiwanese artists. After the official announcement, the 20.000 tickets were sold out within just 5 minutes. This year, MEGAPORT FESTIVAL expands its scale to 10 different stages, featuring more than 100 bands and artists, and even more market stands. The venue spanns both sides of the Kaohsiung Harbor. To visit all the stages, one needs to cross a bridge across the entire harbor. The stages are built in warehouses, on roofs, on a yacht, on the pier side, and also on a huge square, with diverse forms and unique styles. The size of the venue makes MEGAPORT FESTIVAL the largest music festival in Taiwan.
While being held as scheduled during the global pandemic, MEGAPORT FESTIVAL is fully prepared for epidemic prevention. Before redeeming the entry bracelet, one has to complete an online real-name registration process. Every audience is required to wear masks during performances. Moreover, the food stands and the eating area are separated to avoid group transmission after removing the masks.
Taiwan is one of the few countries that managed to stably control the epidemic. Although people in Taiwan are able to maintain most parts of our lives as usual, there are still some things that would never be the same. For the artists and audiences of MEGAPORT FESTIVAL, they all cherished this opportunity very much. Considering this, Chthonic also stated that they would strive to make this performance as perfect and memorable as possible, and they will make a live album for the show.
