H.P Lovecraft was one of the first authors of fantastic and dark literature. Most of his stories are built around facts that the main character usually puzzles together, inevitably going from gloomy deductions to what he call "Ominous Conclusions," like in his most famous story: The Call of Cthulhu. His writings have a huge influence on all forms of today's art and entertainment (movies, comics, music, paintings and graphic arts...), and played an important part in the birth of the "Steampunk" current, and in the role-playing games industry, among other things.

"The Outsider" is in fact one of Lovecraft's most famous tales, and by far one of his favorites! It is a weird tale involving both the fantastic and the macabre... The strange story of a person who lives alone in an old ruined castle, and doesn't seem to remember much of his/her life... Longing for the company of other people, this person desperately tries to escape this aeon-long cursed place. It is in fact one of the very few tales from Lovecraft to rely mostly on human feelings. And given the context, I think that's what makes it so beautiful!

Luis decided to divide my EP into three parts so it closely follows Lovecraft's story and allows the music to outline the different passages more clearly:

Part I : Alone
Part II: An Uncertain Escape
Part III: A Ghoulish Revelation

To really match the weird atmosphere of this fantastic tale, Luis has written exclusively for symphonic orchestra and electric guitar. Here, the mournful melodies of the guitar are beautifully balanced with the textures of the string, woodwind, and brass sections. And from time to time, harp, piano, and celesta add a light eerie touch that perfectly suits this ethereal tale. It's the kind of music you could hear in a Tim Burton movie (composed by Danny Elfman), only it's Metal! 🤘🏻^^

The Project:

With the help of two friends who work in the cinema industry, Luis has decided to shoot a music-video of all three parts of The Outsider! What really made up his mind is the place. Part of this film will be shot in the woods, but most of it will take place in a wonderful Medieval castle of the XIth century: Château de Varennes-Lès-Mâcon.

This castle is dark, hidden, and contained, with tall trees closing in on it on the East side. If you look at its gorgeous round towers at each corner and its magnificent drawbridge, flanked by torches, on a gloomy day, it puts you right in a "Lovecraftian" mood. The great green pool facing the East Wing and the worn statues riddling the garden add a strange feeling of aeon-long abandonment to the whole place. Inside, dark rooms are lined with strange paintings, great mirrors, and countless objects of unimaginable origins. It easily reminds the West Wing of the Beast's castle or the home of Edward Scissorhands.
