Nail - Power And Greed album cover

I was always a fan of the Canadian Rock/Metal scene in general. I can't remember a band that I've listened to in the past from that country in the north of America that I found bad or mediocre. NAIL is a band from Canada and it's the first time I come across them, so I was anxious to see if the tradition of non-bad bands would continue or not.

Formed in 2007 by Ranier (Rhino, as the booklet photo says) and Cindy Wiechmann (both ex-HELIX members), they released their self titled-debut album in the same year. So now, they have their second album "Power and Greed" (or as they wrote on the cover "Potestas Et Avidistas") out, released on May 2010, produced again by Ranier.

Of course their music has some common elements with HELIX but it is not a copy. They may move in the traditional Hard Rock/Heavy Metal fields, but some of the riffs could be categorized (since unfortunately most of the readers want something like that, even if I don't like it) as 'stoner' or 'doom' oriented due to the low tuning and the bass lines that will bring the great Geezer Butler to mind. So to sum it up, someone might say that it is a mixture of early RUSH with some more heavy riffing and some progressive phrases in the compositions. The voice of C binds nicely with the music, even though, to tell you the truth, I didn't expect it. There are some moments that the music reminds me of songs I've listened to in the past, like in "Saving Face", but I can't remember which they are! Of course all the musicians are great in their duties, no laughs please, since they are all veterans in the scene.

Yes, "Power and Greed" is not giving something new, yes it may remind you of some other songs you may have heard before but in the end it is a well-played album. The quartet seams they are having a great time and I am sure that fans of the heavier side of melodic Rock with a spice of the 'progressive' style here and there will enjoy the album.
