I have the feeling that something is going on in the Hard Rock scene. I mean many news pop out of nowwhere playing music wakes forgotten memories for all the old Metal geezers out there. The British band VOODOOSIX kind of falls into the aforementioned category bringing a smile on my face and some memories in my mind.
The band was formed in 2003 and tried to make the first discographic step two years later with the debut album Feed My Soul. But as it usually happens in the music industry the album got lost into oblivion due to the poor promotion by the label. The band gathered strength and almost three years after the disasterous debutr returns with First Hit for Free that comprises the same tracklist plus a brand new song. The album was also remixed by Mike Fraser for the best result. VOODOOSIX had the chance to go on the road opening DIO, UFO and IRON MAIDEN. Particularly, Steve Harrris has stated that this is the best debut album I've heard in years. So, besides Steve I should add my words of wisdom about this release...
The album opener is the new track that was added in the original tracklist and it says everything about the band. Hard Rock with a touch of Grunge guitars brings us an American sound in the vein of SOUNDGARDEN. The dirty guitar sound wraps around Rundell's voice that is just perfect for this genre. The hearty vibrato sets foot on the Stoner scene convincing me not to hit the stop button because the Seatle scene is definately not even close my cup of tea. The guitar solo was a nice touch making of think of a lighter version of SPIRITUAL BEGGARS. No Friend of Mine and Feed My Soul come in smoother with high pitched and melodic vocals and move closer (thanks Satan) to the Stoner sound despite the slap bass in the latter. Rundell shines in the power ballads Siants And Sinners and Mistaken with powerful and expressional vocals proving his high potentials. The latter track is the highlight of the album comprising an excellent guitar solo near the end.
All in all, I think this a well made album that just did not connect to my feelings and personal standards. Maybe the Grunge atmosphere has something to do with it. The bottom line is that I recommend this one to everyone who likes bands like SOUNDGARDEN or AUDIOSLAVE and is ok with this mainstream sound. The Stoner finishing touches and the very good guitar solos were not enough to make me aggree with Mr Harris on his statement about the 'best debut album of the year.' Sorry Steve...
