SWEET APPLE: "World I'm Gonna Leave You" Video.
July 30, 2017
SWEET APPLE, the rock 'n' roll band featuring J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr., Heavy Blanket), Tim Parnin (Cobra Verde, Chuck Mosley), John Petkovic (Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, Guided By Voices) and Dave Sweetapple (Witch, Eerie), will release their new album, Sing the Night in Sorrow, tomorrow via Tee Pee Records. Today, the band releases a video for the new single "World I'm Gonna Leave You", shot on location aboard "The Death Car," a haunted 1930's train that was involved in one of the grisliest transportation accidents in America when 26 passengers were boiled to death in New York, 1943. The video features the band themselves as cast members while the song includes vocals from both Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age) and Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices). SWEET APPLE collaborated across several state lines to create the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2014 release, The Golden Age of Glitter, hailed as "throwback power pop that should soothe the soul of just about any riff-loving rock fan" by Esquire and one of the "Best Albums of 2014" by ABC News. Given the band's geographical reach -- its four members live in Massachusetts, Vermont and Ohio -- it's no surprise that SWEET APPLE's inner circle has expanded outwards on Sing the Night in Sorrow. In addition to Mark Lanegan and Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), the album features contributions from Rachel Haden (Haden Triplets) and Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Nada Surf).
Meanwhile, Stephen McBean (Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops) will join the band on second guitar for upcoming live dates. Sing the Night in Sorrow's cover art features "it girl" Chelsea Debo, who recently starred in Lana Del Rey's "Love" video.
"The themes of 'Sing the Night in Sorrow' explore abandonment and desolation that reflect both the left-for-dead urban landscapes of places like Cleveland and the forgotten small towns of New England -- places crawling with drugs and ghosts and people that have been left behind," offers Petkovic. "A number of songs on the record have "abandoned" or "ruins" type themes. It's also reflected in music on the album which breaks down equally between the loud noise of the city and the softer elegiac songs of the town."
Sing the Night in Sorrow also explores themes such as longing and escape, darkness consumed by endless daylight, love amid lovelessness, faulty memory, alienation and distance. The LP is set to a musical palette that is wide-ranging, mixing atmosphere with impact. Sing The Night In Sorrow rolls out insurgent guitars, glitter-stomp, and orchestrated pop, at once timeless and contemporary.
