Lawless Darkness

Do you remember WATAIN? Yeah, they are these guys that had kicked my sorry ass back in 2007 with an album entitled "Sworn To The Dark". I was so sure that this trio would be something like a superhero for the tortured Black Metal scene, the saviours of this music. I even "placed" them in the pantheon of Black Metal (not that they needed my help for that). For all this, I was hoping for a dynamic reply from the Swedish legion. And guess what I got...
One more marvelous Black Metal album! Did you think WATAIN would ever disappoint you? "Lawless Darkness" is one step forward for the Swedish horde, since everything has been thoroughly thought of and worked as it seems after many listening sessions. Most Black Metal bands may have endless songs full of "spooky" atmosphere, but a band like WATAIN prove that you don't need stuff like that to make the listener devote his ears and mind to your music. Approximately 73 minutes of pure, aggressive and a bit melodic Black Metal straight in your fucking face and nothing less or more is what this power trio has to offer you in here! I was really amazed to see myself being 101% concentrated throughout a purely aggressive release without acoustic parts, useless interludes etc.
Erik Danielsson proves that he is Jon Nodtveidt's best student (in a good sense of course), "adopting" his godlike songwriting skills, skills that were laid upon this filthy bastard entitled "Lawless Darkness". The title is also pretty indicative of what you will face in this album, since darkness (a basic ingredient for WATAIN's music) and the absence of laws craft a chaotic Black Metal assault full of relentless drumming, razor sharp guitars, wicked melodies and Danielsson's hellish screams!
When I wrote my review on the band's previous album, "Sworn To The Dark", I made a mistake, describing WATAIN as the best underground Black Metal band. My bad. WATAIN is not an underground band, not anymore. The Swedish demons have managed to rise and shine with hard work and brilliant music, rightfully earning their place in the altar of the Black Metal gods! All hail the unholy trinity!
