Norwegian thrash group VORBID come in with their second full-length effort, "Mind," released through Indie Recordings. To tell the truth, based on the band name, the visuals, the artwork, the song-titles, I thought this was going to be some more jazzy, progressive type of Thrash, but I was sadly disappointed. Then, when I opened the album, and realized that even though it's only 5 tracks, it's still an LP, and saw a 23 minute title-track, needless to say, I became preeeeeetty interested.
As for the first 4 tracks, which are still quite long, very basic Thrash, doesn't hurt to listen to, but probably wouldn't if I wasn't reviewing it, and probably won't ever again. The only thing I legitimately wanted to hear (because deep down I knew I wouldn't like this kind of stuff) was "Mind", and while it's definitely the best song on the record, as a standalone composition, it's somewhere between "okay" and "would listen to a few times, before I got bored".
I think the 23 minute length was pretty much a gimmick and they didn't actually have any artistic direction to take this concept. It's not progressive, it's not interesting, it doesn't have a reoccurring part or theme or anything like that that could act as a purpose or reason to make the second half of this album just one song. Oh and also, this record probably has the worst vocals I've ever heard, and I've listened to DESIGN THE SKYLINE and BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR before. Not to mention, the production here is also Awful, with a capital A. Overall, I feel this LP did nothing but worsen my relationship with Thrash Metal. Disappointed.
