Survival Instinct - I Am the Night album cover

SURVIVAL INSTINCT is not for the faint of ears. In just six years, the Quebecoise quartet has earned a reputation for being the most abusive to their instruments. Their third full-length album I Am the Night begins with a manic score of unhinged, corrosive noise. Alexis "Alex-Scie" Massicotte isn't playing with sticks, he's using a baseball bat on that drum set of his! The audio massacre of a drum kit is nothing to the wild jibbering vocals of Martin Paquet who has the power to control circle pits churning at hurricane levels. SURVIVAL INSTINCT shows their will to survive by clawing and kicking and screaming in I Am the Night.

"For Murder" starts off with the bloodcurdling scream of Paquet being stabbed onstage while someone else furiously stabs the snare drums. Clean vocals, what are those? Asks Paquet as he babbles with every ounce of conviction he has into the mic. There is no question that the air in I Am the Night is charged with electricity and it sparks wildly in every tangled, messy chord as it travels into and through Paquet at his mic stand. "13 Witches" literally shrieks in pain; a doom song someone stuck into an electric socket.

The whole album is forty-three minutes of tachycardial riffs that move so fast, I'm shocked that Napalm "L'Wiff" Holocaust doesn't have permanent burns on his fingers from years of heavy friction. You can hear the fire from all that friction eating its way through the speakers as the recording equipment is consumed in title track "I Am the Night". SURVIVAL INSTINCT travel so fast musically, they careen far into the territory of Speed Metal as the tires blow out and the car starts to spark from the hubcaps. I Am the Night is a wild ride of Thrash.
